Jonric from RPG Vault interviews Namco Bandai's David Georgeson about Mage Knight Apocalypse:Jonric: Before we get to your project, what is the underlying Mage Knight universe like, how is it distinctive, and what makes it a particularly good as the basis for a computer game?
David Georgeson: The Mage Knight universe was originally marketed as a tabletop miniatures war game. Thus the backgrounds of the Land's countries aren't generally "black" or "white"... they're all shades of grey instead. This makes it possible for gamers to enjoy playing from any side, and that makes for a VERY interesting role-playing world where everyone has their own reasons for doing what needs to be done. After all, there have been very few cases where any country's leader actually considered themselves evil. They were "just doing what needed to be done" at the time.
Additionally, the Mage Knight universe is comfortably approachable from a fantasy perspective - it has elves, dwarves, orcs, etc. - but it also brings a big mix of new ideas to the table as well. For instance, the Atlantean Technomancy combines magic with machinery to create floating cities and fortresses, the Draconum are a hybrid of man and dragon with a stable society revolving around martial arts and magic, and the Necropolis is a culture of the undead in which Vampire Houses just recently had a savage civil war. It's rich and varied, bringing new ideas to a genre which is sometimes considered too clichéd. |
