Gamespy jas posted the third installment of their Horizons Dev Diary, written by Designer Shawn F. Carnes. It deals with "techniques" -- player-developed abilities that take the idea of "scripts" and "macros" to a whole new level:
We have divided techniques into different categories based on their function within the game. There are four standard categories that apply to items: equips, spell equips, activates, and kickers. (These are the internal design names we have been using, so they aren't as elegant as they can be. This will change with the final release.) Each of these categories allows the player to modify the function of their items and allow a different range of event information to share the same delivery package. A player will be able to combine techniques in a mix-and-match fashion during item construction (and in the case of "socketing" -- after item construction is complete). We are looking to techniques to function as the cornerstone of the trade skill system. Players will be much more invested in their equipment when they not only build it, but design it as well. Techniques will be the palette from which tradespeople will be able to create loads of interesting items within the framework of the game world. |
