Lead Scriptwriter Daniel Bisson is the author of the latest Black Moon Chronicles Development Diary at RPGVault. Here's something:
In the last diary, we talked about the evolution since the beginning of the development of what we currently call the "special abilities" system (in other words, the skill/spell system). In this diary, we will share with you how we came up with it and what each character represents - at least what we want them to ;)

Let's start by how we came up with it. We started from the premise that characters in Black Moon Chronicles are all heroes in the making, they all therefore have magical capabilities; it's what separates them from the rest of the habitants of the Land of Lhynn. As you've probably guessed, we all grew up playing pen and paper RPGs - who in their right mind didn't anyhow? :) This definitely had an influence on us and gave us lots of different ideas. It was also important to keep one thing in mind during the conception of the system though; we want players to be able to play by themselves if they don't feel like grouping. Each character is therefore able to adventure alone into the Land of Lhynn and if played wisely, he should succeed. There are obviously zones of the map that are extremely dangerous for solo play and that's one of the parts where group play comes in handy in Black Moon Chronicles. Players can, however, follow their storylines in playing solo.
