Welcome to December :-). Zocks holds an interview with Andrew Brazier from Headfirst Productions about their H.P. Lovecraft-inspired game "Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth". Here's a part of it:
5. Depicting Horror makes Horror less "fearful". There are quite a few games out, wich had made me really frightend: Alone i.t. Dark, Undying and Aliens vs Predator, esp. AvP, because you cannot escape. I'm frightend that CoC will not frighten me. Can you help?
It is very true that horror exists to the largest degree in the mind of the person experiencing it (i.e. the person playing the game). Therefore a lot of the horror in the game is hinted at or has already happened, with the player encountering the aftermath. Of course there are times where he will confront the creatures and be scared, but we don’t want to overdo it because as you say that will have a negative effect. This is also not a game which attempts to scare the player and nothing else - we want the player to feel really involved with the environments they are in and most of all to enjoy the gaming experience. |
