Age of Conan week continues at RPG Vault. In Peek #3 the RPG Vault team take a look at the technology behind Funcom's forthcoming game. The interview includes six exclusive screenshots.
When Funcom decided to embark on Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures (Conan), we needed to take a serious look at our technology base. Despite the fact that we are one of the companies in the world with the longest experience in developing online RPGs, we truly had to evolve to the next level with Conan. You can never rest on your laurels in this industry, so we simply had to make sure the game would shine in today's extremely competitive landscape.

As such, we decided to focus on the further evolution of our proprietary Dreamworld engine, as opposed to licensing something off the shelves like many online RPG companies are doing. Not only would this give us a needed edge, (and something different, assuming we would reach our goals), but it would also mean we could build an engine where the overall design, pipeline and implementation process was taken into account. There is naturally more to our technology than just the engine; you probably wouldn't believe how much stuff is being put into it. ;)
