Gamespy has an interview with Chris Gray of Headfirst Studios about a game I'd like to see more of - Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corner of the Earth:GameSpy: What are the in-game effects of losing your sanity?
Chris Gray: The concept of Jack's mental health and its slow degradation is one of the core concepts in Dark Corners of the Earth. This loss in sanity will risk the development of specific mental conditions; these include shaking, blurred vision, hallucinations, dizziness, and panic. Most of these are scalable, relative to current mental health, and the effects are simulated in-game through manipulation of graphics, sound, control, and the environment. The development of conditions in the game can come through two potential avenues, either randomly through the generic sanity system, or from scripted sequences -- the latter being used where it helps the narrative and makes sense for a condition to develop. However, the generic system provides enough diversity to keep the player on their toes at all times, and also provides a different experience on subsequent playthroughs. |
