This tutorial will demonstrate how the Spacer
is used to manipulate a Gothic world. It differs from the original
German version in a few important ways. So pay attention ;-). If
you're new to Gothic editing, you should bear in mind that the Spacer,
the topic of this tutorial, is only one of several tools which are
necessary in building Mods for Gothic. The others aren't described
here.
We'll be starting with a pre-existing map (TESTLEVEL.ZEN), adding
an object or two, then some waypoints, and writing and triggering
a simple script.
So let's go. Start up Spacer.exe. This should be in your GOTHIC/SYSTEM
folder. If it's not, stop now and find out why not. Now, load the
level via the Open ZEN option on the File menu. It's in GOTHIC/_WORK/DATA/WORLDS/TESTLEVEL/TESTLEVEL.ZEN
Once it's loaded, you should see something like this...
... although your map is more interesting. You'll notice that the
Spacer's tooltips are helpfully in English, as are many of the property
and class names you will see. (Which is why this pic is covered
in explanatory notes for the Germans.) Use the cursors to move around
in the 3d view window. Page up and page down alter the camera angle.
A and Z are supposed to move the camera up and down. If you have
English keyboard settings however, you'll have to use A and Y :(
Or change your keyboard settings to German :-))
You can use the shift key to speed up movement, and there's movement-speed
slider under General on the Settings menu. You should be able to
see the Player Start Point (StartVob) somewhere, as in the picture
above. This is where the player will start on entering this world.
If you can't, make sure the last button on the horizontal toolbar
(Toggle Helpervobs) is pressed in, and go looking for it. Vobs are
Virtual Objects, and Helpervobs are those abstract objects which
the player won't actually see but which allow you to place some
effect in the game world.
