Torment is most definitely the most emotional roleplaying experience to date. It provides the player with a superior storyline, lots of well-written dialogue and great art, set in WotC's Planescape setting. The only downside to the intensely story-driven gameplay is that the game is relatively linear, almost adventure game-like. |

A conversation-intensive game where what you say to someone actually matters. I've always been frustrated by the slow character development in the AD&D games, which caused me downgrade the score some, but this game is certainly worth your time, particularly if you enjoy the "story" aspect of RPGs. |

I'm not a huge fan of the Baldur's Gate series, so I was PLEASANTLY surprised when i played this game. What a fantastic and engaging story! Also, the characters in your party are some of the most interesting i've run into since Ultima 4.
Also, the option to talk your way through encounters is just brilliant.
I don't know why this game wasn't more popular when it came out.

If you like talking this is your game. It won a bunch of awards so I'm probably wrong or in the minority, but I personaly don't get it. Its like the "make your own adventure" books with fancy graphics. I must say, the best story of any rpg I've ever played, and i've played almost all of em (since the 90s). This game also makes the Infinity Engine really shine, bigger characters and a better interface. I agree with some of the other scores saying how they were sad when the game ended, i was too. The whole game is just awesome. |

Being a great lover of adventure games I was totaly surprised seeing a story like this in a CRPG. This game has a great depth. I is not following AD&D rules by the book, and that why I love this game. AD&D are for p&p not for PC gaming. All the characters of the game were unique and unforgetable. The planescape universe is by far better than forgotten realms. |

Started off kinda slow and sat on my harddrive unplayed for months. Then one day I just booted it up and it hooked me. The story just drew me in so much I played it pretty much non-stop from that point to completion. And Morte... *tear* I've never had more sympathy for any CRPG characters than I did for the Torment gang. Game definitely proves there are two sides to every story. May not have been the most action-packed game, but if you enjoy reading books anyway, this game won't bother you at all. |

I wasn't that into the game in the begining, but after I found the woman to make me a mage and the story kept unfolding I became addicted to it. It is definatly better than baldurs gate (which I think is an outstanding game in its own right) but this has so much depth and character. I found myself staying up later and later just to find out a little more about this guys past and why he was cursed. |

It took me seconds to get into, much quicker than Baldurs Gate. However, I eventually found the gameplay too slow and a bit linear so quit out around 75% of the way through. I keep meaning to go back to finish it though... |

Ultima7 had for a long time been my all time favorite game. Nothing ever compared with ultima. Baldurs Gate came close but nah. Then came Torment! The storyline, the characters, it is my favorite game and I missed it for a long time when I finished.

Though graphics are perhaps not as great as some other games, the story is second to none. Excellent writing. Excellent plot. Requires a lot

Torment is certainly the best roleplaying game I've ever played. It has a deep, moving storyline that's about non-standard as an RPG story can get, and the Planescape setting has always been one of my favorites. No swords, no dragons, no dwarves, no elves. Lots of dialogue. Pure bliss. |

Admittedly I'm an RPG fan in general, but this stands head and shoulders above any others I've played (with the possible exception of Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Sega Saturn).
Why? It's written far more intelligently than any others, with a degree of black humour rarely evident, and is brilliantly voice acted by a surprisingly high profile cast (including Homer Simpson, and the X-Files' own Assistant Director Skinner). |

I simply can not give this game enough praise. My short attention span has doomed me to not be able to finish most RPG's. But the depth of this game, be it character development, optional game paths, or the dozens of other high points of this game, have kept me playing it over and over.
If you are looking for something different than all the other "knight fighting goblins" games, look no further.
Only one question: Where the heck is the next one? |

Both are 110% wrong. No game offers as unlimited char development as PST. Yes you can't choose a char at the start BUT unlike 99% of all other games you actually create the character while playing.
And the world is quite big but I bet you only played the first chapter. BAD review. You should play the game longer before doing a review.

Perhaps the best story ever implemented into any RPG. Excellent story writing with believable and interesting characters. Intricate and original gameworld with fascinating visual design. Also, unlike many games, the ending doesn't seem half-hearted, it resolves what has happened in the game in a very satisfying manner. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. |

I've never rreally liked the isometric style in RPG's but after reading all these rave reviews (both here on RPGDot and in magazines) I figured I'd give it a try. So I went out and bought this game, installed it and spent a few hours trying to get engrossed in the story. But after about 100 pages of superboring text I had enough. What is it about this game that everyone likes? I don't get it. Not even the graphics were anything special. Bah. Huuuge disappointment. |

This is definately my favorite RPG ever, hell my favorite game EVER!! Im a harsh RPG judge, in fact, 95% of games i play that are conisdered RPGs
I call walkthroughs (every single final fantacy and diablo and even icewind dale). I enjoy those games somewhat but they dont have the story or the decision making that keeps me glued to to the monitor. Planescape: TORMENT definately does. I rather not even call it a game, i consider it an experience. Its is that epic. I love the story, i love the game play, i love the dialogue, i love the sinister inviorment of sigiL, I love the character building, name it , i love it! The story could be made into a better than great movie (8 hrs long.....) but id watch it! The story is that good. I've played through the baldurs gate series 3 times now. It has a lot of great problem solving and a damn epic story, its amazing, but compared to TORMENT, it's well...final fantasy 8. TORMENT does take patience though. Only true RPGers should take this journey. And if dont like to read...I whouldnt suggest attemping it (the written dialogue whould cause your fragile little head to implode). Also a knowladge of DnD rules is a plus but in TORMENT DnD rules are simplyfied to not take away from the story so youll learn. If you simply love RPGs (not final fantacy since its all horse shit badly translated walk through crap!)buy this game. OR burn it! Black Isle doesnt seem to want to put protections on ANY of their games, including new ones, they are trully for gamers by gamers. I myself support the small company though, and i suggest that. In closing, if you like the FALLOUT series, baldurs gates, and any other true RPG, get TORMENT its god af all! |

Well I haven't played many of the newest CRPG first person shooters (besides Morrowind, which had the most dull character interactions in the world), but this had the most intellectually and emotionally stimulating story, environment, and characters! Some people said that this is bioware's game, which it isn't, it was actually from the same (almost exact same) makers of the Fallouts and partially BG1 and BG2. It takes what Fallouts lacked, fantasy/immagination and deep storyline (but in the same way Fallout was the opposite of Torment, a harsh, gritty reality and true depiction of people in a very real world). I wasn't that sad when Torment ended... as I just went and played it like 5 more times as different characters and alignments, and EVERY single time I found many things new (even when i had the same characters!) <-- now that is brilliance in a game. I haven't played it in 2 years and I just now started a game about a week ago, still finding it fun |

The sort of deep, intelligent gameplay I've been looking for since I have been old enough to shave. Makes me wonder why the majority of rpgs shy away from real character development into the realm of click-fests. One thing that I loved about it was the extent that xp was granted only for killing things and how much one could express ones character in conversation rather than just "Yes I will help you save the princess". |

The game is very addictive with a rich and colourful storyline. But that is a hickhack too. While the combat system, charakter developement & plot is simple fun to play
(nothing real challenging for hardcore roleplayers) - the story is superb and a real deep experience for oldschool roleplayers & beginners the same. But the game has beside the mass of dialogues no strrenghs futher & lacks free game feeling. |

I have replayed the game a dozen times, it is that engrossing. So what if it doesn't have 3rd edition rules, npc interaction is second to none, you must interact with party members to gain experience to progress in the game. If you like deep challenging rpg's then you must have already played this one - if not? You are missing out! |

I started out playing Ultima 7 when I was younger and have tried to play every good RPG that has come out. This is hands down THE best RPG ever made. I would go so far as to claim it was the best game ever made but I am biased towards CRPGs. I wish there were a sequel - I would buy it in a second. If you don't like story based games, don't bother. |

Simply brilliant. The story is deep and has a good amount of surprises. This game also uses ability scores in a brilliant way, every one of them are important in their own way. The amount of dialogue is enormous and masterfully done. The planescape setting was masterfully used in the game and that alone should be enough for a great game. The graphic is worse than in the Baldur's Gate but you will not notice it after a while. The only thing that I didn't like about this game was the inteface, but no-ones perfect.
I don't understand what some people mean by being linear. You can travel freely between many locations, there are tons of side-quests and several game endings.
I also think that it can't be considered short. If Planescape is short what do you think about such tiny games like Diablo II than?!

Where is distinct border between good and evil? Where are paladdins and demons, where are pure good and true evil? Hell, almost all npcs are true neutral! And what the twist: a stinky tanerri will heal you and let you rest, then an angel will make a war! Oh, I'm sick of this. I think such a game may be preferable for neutrals (in real life), searching for stupid non-existent balance between good and evil, but not for ones, who made a choice. |

Planescape Torment had the best NPCs that I have ever had the pleasure of fighting side by side with. Annah, Dak'kon, and Morty felt like real people to me. You could talk to them, ask them questions, and they actually learned more as the game went along. I will never forget this game because the writing, story, dialog, and NPCs were just fantastic. This ranks with Ultima VII for great memories for me. |

Unfortunately I played this game years after its release and maybe the limited graphics and technical options rubbed me the wrong way. But considering its disadvantages to modern-day games, it was a gem and a half! What a bizarre world which made it even more satisfying! Actually, I'm glad the graphics were outdated when I played it because I probably would have become sick to my stomch in a quick sec after some of the dialogue and actions in this game involving a quasi-undead world. Even though it borrowed a license from D&D, still one of the more original RPGs to me just because it was a spin on your typcial wizards and dragons theme. |

i gotta say that i loved this game. yes there's stuff that i wasn't completely taken with like the lack of ranged weapons (although smaller characters would have been necessary for that) and a less than enthralling combat. however the awesome storyline and npcs that you can really care about (i just wasn't convinced by party interaction in the BG series) makes up for it for me |

The look takes getting some used to, despite PS:T using the by then familiar Infinity engine. The reading requirement is also quite hefty. It was alleged that the total amount of textual information in the game will fill a good-sized novel. I'm inclined to believe the allegation. But if you're into immersing yourself into a well-crafted story, there has never been a better choice than PS:T. |

I didn't like it's "way off this world" fantasy story, and the games other aspect's: Character development, gameworld, combat, Item system was mostly unbalanced and below normal standard. It's actually one of the very few games I can't follow "the major crowd" in why they actually adore this game??? Long and more endless long high fantasy NPC text's can't alone make a CRPG superior in my book, even if I would like the story. |

Best RPG I played. Enormous, stunning, rich. Just finished it first time, it took me 3 weeks. This is as good as Gothic and much better than Morrowing. Slightly better than Neverwinter Nights (somewhat similar). Hope that helps you in your search. |

Absolutely awesome story, and although it took me a few weeks to complete it altogether I wanted more and more and more. Nice graphics, wonderful dialogs and excellent gameplay.

This is my second favorite after fallout. It has the best writing I've ever seen in a game, and the NPC's are second to none.I find Planescape is the most complex and interesting D&D setting, and I was skeptical they could explore it's full potential in a CRPG, but Black Isle pulled it off better than I could have imagined and created one of the most unique and engrossing stories that can be found in a computer game. |

Repetitive dungeon/action it's why I gave up this one very fast. And complex story line didn't help. In fact so complex that it was quite tough to understand. No surprise that a sequel has never been released. |

Still my favourite, number one RPG! The characters are so deep, and the story incredibly addictive. It's got multiple ending (though still relatively linear), and is packed with side quests. Very very very good. |

Torment is closest to the piece of art. With an atmosphere from Wolfe's "New Sun", No "happy ending" story line, and non-shablonised characters it stands not as the best in the genre but above the genre. Even now in 2006. there is no CRPG which done so much for ART of gaming. |

Absolutely magnificient! Emotionaly involving, deep story, wonderful characters and dialogues. I've played so many cRPGs where I'd just skip most dialogues, like "oh how good is to kill a goblin", crap crap crap silly stuff. In Torment it never happened - it's like a good, interactive book. Planescape: Torment feels like a game made with passion, like a piece of art. Not to sell best, not adressing those youngest gamers (no simple plot or immature chars here).
I've played many Crpgs and this one is simply the best, topping even Fallouts. |

Okay, what can I say about this game that hasn't already been raved about?
It has the single best and deepest story of any game I've ever played. Bar none. You can play your character as anything from lawful good to chaotic evil without breaking quests or having your roleplaying options unfairly limited.
The dialogue's excellent, and there's a huge amount of it. Honestly, I think the text does more to capture the Planescape atmosphere than the graphics do (though I still think it's the prettiest Infinity Engine game to be released!)
All of your NPCs are unique, with their own backstories and histories.
If the game's lacking at all, it's that the combat isn't superb -- don't come into this game expecting a dungeon crawl a la IWD2 or parts of BG2: ToB. What makes this game is the story. |

I actually first started playing this pretty late.
Bought it over Ebay after hearing people praise it.
And I must say, this is a great game.
I have never experienced a story and the progressing as good as this one.
Its hard to explain but after I completed the game I had a strange feeling of loss.
The NPCs and the interaction with everything is incredible made.
But if you do not like to read alot, then its not a game for you. |

By far the best RPG I ever played (even surpassing Wizardry 6 and Pool of Radiance), and not only for nostalgic reasons. This is one of the few RPG where your actions really have consequences plus it sports a really great story.
Would love to see a successor (if only in spirit) of this game. |
