Rend's Rants: The weirdest game of all

I am back from my trip to Italy now, having enjoyed unexpectedly good weather and great sights and sites. November isn't the best time to travel to this country, yet accomodation is cheap and there's a lack of tourists, which I really enjoyed.

When I came back, I decided to play the weirdest game of all: upgrading my OS. Having had quite some problems with 98SE and my VIA chipset, I thought I could give XP a try because I thought things coudln't get worse. In a way, I was right - in another way I was dead wrong.

First of all, XP is stable, slick and pretty fast. If you have to be productive with your computer, it is an improvement over previous versions. If you are a gamer, there are some traps. Most games will run, some won't. My GeForce 3 Ti200 refuses to play the opening movie from Blade of Darkness and kills my computer when playing aldur's Gate 2. I don't think it's a driver problem, since it happens with all versions of the NVidia drivers I ever tried and got working. The Empire Earth demo, for example, runs without flaws, as does Diablo 2. Gothic doesn't show the opening movie, and in game the player shadwo behaves pretty strange. Hovever, the game is fully playable and smooth like silk with my configuration.

It's too early to tell you more about compatibility, but according to a major german gaming magazine, most newer games will run perfectly. Applications behave fine here, and so far I think XP is one of the better releases MS has made.

So, from now on I will be back on the scene, reporting news about the games we like so much. Thanks to the team for doing such a great job - it's a pleasure being part of it.
