Baldur's Gate: 2/10 points |
I got to the 3rd chapter, got bored, and quit playing. I was much happier playing Might and Magic VI at the time, and it was one of the worse games in the series. I tried playing BG again after I had beaten M&M6, but I still couldn't get into it. |
Betrayal at Krondor: 3/10 points |
I really never could get into this game. I bought it when it first came out, played it for about 10 hours, then completely forgot about it. It just wasn't enough to draw my attention away from the latest Ultima or Might and Magic games. A year or two later, I gave it another try - same result. I just couldn't get hooked on it. |
Darklands: 9/10 points |
As I've said before, I love open-ended games. THE BEST character generation system than any other game, period. I probably spent hours creating, recreating, and tweaking characters until I had four I was satisfied with. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 10/10 points |
One of the best RPG's ever created. The skill system is pure genius. I'm annoyed that most people complain saying it's too easy, but the game is what you make of it. If you read message boards to find out where the best items are, easy ways to get money, and how to raise your enchant skill to 100 and create items that make you essentially invincible, then the game will seem more tedious than challenging. Spending an hour summoning Golden Saints in order to get a Daedric tower shield just can't compete with the time I happened upon a guy wielding a Daedric long sword, which I had to use several potions and spells to kill. |
EverQuest: 2/10 points |
Bought the game for $10. Installed it, played it for 5 or 10 hours, uninstalled it, and cancelled my account. |
Might & Magic 2 - Gates to Another World: 10/10 points |
Might and Magic and Ultima are two series that are very close to my heart. I have a hard deciding which M&M game is the best. 2 may only be the slightest bit behind 4 and 5. I've put at least 150 hours into this game, and loved every minute of it (I remember how cool it was when I found a scimitar +33). It was probably the first game to really get me into RPG's. |
Might & Magic 3 - Isles of Terra: 9/10 points |
Maybe the 4th best game in the series, behind 4,5, and 2. I beat the game, but can't really remember all that much about it. I remember 2,4 and 5 vividly, but about all I remember about 3 was drinking some fluids out of barrels, which was the only way to permanently raise your stats. |
Might & Magic 5 - Darkside of Xeen: 10/10 points |
Cloads and Darkside were probably the best games of the series. I played these games (as World of Xeen) so much that I didn't have enough money to level-up, and I cleared out every area and dungeon, so I couldn't get any more money. The cutscenes were awesome, far ahead of their time. |
Might & Magic 6 - The Mandate of Heaven: 3/10 points |
Ok, why is this the highest Might & Magic game on this list? EVERY game in the series prior to this one was better. Sure it was a huge world, and it took me about 50-60 hours to beat the game, but as I look back, I have very very few fond memories of this game. I probably put twice the amount of time into M&M2, and still haven't beat it (and probably never will, since I can't find my character disk). |
Neverwinter Nights: 4/10 points |
Ok, I wanted to like this game, I really did. I mainly got the game for it's single player game (I hadn't played a good cRPG in years), but I just quit playing somewhere in chapter 2. I was really expecting it to be more fun. The graphics were ok, but the tilesets got repetitive. And I HATE load times between zones. RPG's nowadays simply should NOT have load times between zones. Grrrrr, it pisses me off. |
Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor: 1/10 points |
WHY DID I BUY THIS GAME!!! I wasn't going to buy it, but I've been into D&D for years, and I was just too excited about the 3E rules. I hated this game, and I didn't even run into many bugs. I tried to give it a chance, but the same slow tedious combat over and over and over and .... GRRRRR!!!! |
Quest for Glory 1 - So You Want to be a Hero?: 8/10 points |
Definitely one of the best games of it's time. Man, Sierra was really on top of the world back then. Seems like I wouldn't hardly buy a game if it didn't say "Sierra" or "Origin" on the box. |
Ultima 6 - The False Prophet: 10/10 points |
The first Ultima game I ever played, and definitely one of the best games ever. This was one of the games that got me hooked on RPG's. |
Ultima 7 - Serpent Isle (Sequel): 10/10 points |
Almost as good as Black Gate, but not quite. Black Gate was more nostalgic, which gives it a bit of an edge over SI. SI was also much harder. I would have never beat it if I didn't start dialing in to Origin's bulletin boards to figure out how to get past certain points. Still, this game has to be one of the top 10 RPG's of all times. |
Ultima 7 - The Black Gate: 10/10 points |
Probably my favorite game of the series. I simply love open-ended games, although I seem to waste hours and hours just fooling around. I remeber placing several crates on that horse-drawn cart you can get, then went from town to town stealing everything from plants to swords to forks. I had a house in Britain that I killed the owner of, and loaded it down with crates to store all my loot. Apparently, at one point, I had just too many items in Britain, because walls and other object disappearing from the town. Imagine my surprise when a missing wall allowed me to stroll into the bank and rob them blind. Hehehehe. |
Ultima 8 - Pagan: 9/10 points |
I kind of liked the gameplay. Not the jump-over-lava-or-die part of it, but being able to jump in general was kind of nice. It let me be a bit more creative, like stacking crates up in town to reach an unlocked door on the second floor of a house in which the main door was locked (I never was good at finding keys in Ultima games). Serpent Isle was great, but I was ready to return to Britania, not another strange new world. Especially one with only a single town, limited outdoor areas, and one HUGE dungeon, made up of several sub-dungeons. |
Ultima 9 - Ascension: 10/10 points |
U9 was virtually unplayable on my computer when I first bought it. However, my computer was so out-dated at the time, that even if the game wasn't so buggy, it would have been unplayable. A year later, I bought a new computer and gave it another changce, and I was very impressed. I thought the game was awesome, maybe not the best game in the series, but still a worthy Ultima title. I just wished the launch was delayed until most of the bugs had been patched. Then people could have seen the game for what it was, and I guarantee it would have gotten rave reviews. Honestly, my only gripe with the game was the inventory system. It seemed kind of silly that a bag could only hold 12 items, but any of those items could be a bag, which could hold 12 more items, and so forth. I got to the point where finding a bag was much more exiting than finding a better weapon or armor. |
Ultima Online: 10/10 points |
Probably the single-most time consuming game I've ever played. If I didn't put 500+ hours into this game, I didn't put a single minute. I starting playing during the beta test, then probably played for another 3 years or so. Sure it had some issues, but it was so revolutionary that issues were understandable. The only reason I even cancelled by account was to protest the cancelling of the Ultima Online 2, Origin project. I was sooooo anticipating that game... |
Wizardry 8: 4/10 points |
I just didn't care much for this game. Never really played much of the Wizardry series. Seems like there were always better games out at the time. Same goes for W8. |
