PC-Gaming has a GoldenLand interview online now, talking to Sergey Buravtsov, project leader, head programmer, Evgeny Bratkov, scenario writer and Dmitry Glaznev, aka Alice - scenario writer, too. Here's a bit:
    Q: How does a turn-based role-playing game work?

A: The part of the gaming process happens in real time, the player can talk to NPC’s, take their quests, sell or learn something. The turn-based mode switches on in case of hostile encounters or by the players will, for example if he wants to be the first to start the battle.

Turn-based system allows the player to focus not on the rapid change of the situation but on tactical approach where mind matters more than reaction.

We tried to make the calculations system more precise that made it more varied and interesting. It takes into account lots of factors starting from parameters of the protagonist to global, independent factors and random elements.
