I had this game for about 3 weeks before I finally came up with a boot disk that could make it run, it definitly was worth the wait, I don't think it was the "game to end all games" as others think. But I definitly enjoyed it and played it many times. I more of a Daggerfall, Darklands, Wizardry 7 guy.
If you get it now it is still a pain to get it to work, runs from dos, but there is a mod being worked on to get it to run from windows I think. |

The game itself was deeper and more rewarding than anything then or now. The only problem was Origin's forays into new technology. This was the first game who's immersion was ruined with graphical bugs. |

The story line, the way the world changed all around you depending on your actions, the non-linearity of the whole thing. It is impressive. The little people inside this game actually have lives, they're not your punching bags/cash cows or statues.
I still think the perspective used in the graphics is too extreme and detracting, but once you get used to it the game is simply the best in the series, and probably the best there will ever be.
I wish someone would do a "talkie" version, where characters have real voices; replaying this game you can really "feel" the silence if you've played a lot of talking games lately.
But frankly, no talking game of today sent a chill down my spine like this one did the first time I stepped into a Fellowship Hall and the music started playing; or (one of the few digitized voices in the game) when you're just going about your business and The Guardian's voice booms in your head taunting you, teasing you, patronizing. |

No other game, with the possible exception of CIV series, has captured my imagination and allowed me so much flexablility. I miss games like this soo much, in fact I can't stand diablo and don't even really like Baldurs Gate. Since Ultima7 and Underworld I've not completed a single RPG as they have not been worth my time. The interactivity is nearly complete as nearly everything can be not only maniplated, but sometimes transformed by your actions. But my favorite aspect is having up to 8 in your party which you can assign different roles in combat (if only they would shut up about thier hunger pains for at least five minutes...)If you get the chance, it's worth a play, even today! |

With out a doubt, this was the best RPG ever made. I played that game for over a year! Nothing, I mean nothing has come close to the emmersefulness of this game. I has the one eliment that current games do not, exploration. From the begining one could go wherever he/she wanted. No Zones. No load screens. No loading between dungoens outdoors. Not similar looking areas.
I dare a developer to create a mondern tile-based game with todays graphics. Yes, you can make a tile based game look good.

Ultima 7 is definately the best RPG to date. It had all these qualities:
- Huge, continuous world with no zoning, you could go anywhere, anytime but it would be a long dangerous journey, like it should be!
- You could interact with ANYTHING, pick up chairs, move tables around, stack crates.
- Recruit many characters for huge parties up to 8.
- Buy horses, boats, carts.
- Everyplace was unique and different.
- Many dungeons and caves, some small some huge.
- Completely non-linear with hundreds of well thought out quests and subplots, yet a great overall plot.
Can anyone, ANYONE name a game that has come close to Ultima 7??! I would love to hear of one. All I can think of is Ultima 6! All other RPGs to date have been disappointing cus they don't measure up.

I loved some of the other Ultima efforts, but this game's technical faults ruined the game for me, from its terribly flawed perspective engine to its contrived startup procedures. I couldn't get past the debilitating interface to get into the story itself, which is too bad. It might've been an otherwise excellent game. |

Probably my favorite game of the series. I simply love open-ended games, although I seem to waste hours and hours just fooling around. I remeber placing several crates on that horse-drawn cart you can get, then went from town to town stealing everything from plants to swords to forks. I had a house in Britain that I killed the owner of, and loaded it down with crates to store all my loot. Apparently, at one point, I had just too many items in Britain, because walls and other object disappearing from the town. Imagine my surprise when a missing wall allowed me to stroll into the bank and rob them blind. Hehehehe. |

The pinnacle of RPGs, has yet to be fully duplicated, let alone surpassed in terms of world and npc interaction. And I liked the battle system, it shifted the bulk of your playtime over to quests, story and npc interaction, most games are the opposite, the flesh out the bulk of game time with repetitive battles. And for you people rating Ultima 7 a 1 and Morrowind 10, at least one of the developers of Morrowind has said on record that Ultima 7 was his favorite game and an influence in making Morrowind. Ultima 7 continues to influence games even today, but sadly, not enough. And for anyone rating the game a 1 for little or no comment, unless you've got some constructive criticism as to why you think the game is bad, you're just being haters who can't stand that something is popular and everyone else likes it. Grow up, either make a useful comment or don't bother. |

The U7 series (Black Gate, Serpent Isle and add-ons) is still one of my top3 RPG favourites, its just too good! The immersiveness of the gameworld, freedom of progress within the story and world are all tweaked exactly right IMHO (not too linear and not too non-linear), characters and towns take on a live of their own and the world just feels alive, hard to beat that feeling... |

A true classic that has withstood the test of time in every way except graphical prowess (naturally). No RPG has ever exceeded or even matched the level of world interaction it boasts. For the ultimate roleplaying experience, look no further than Ultima VII and its pseudo-sequel, Serpent Isle. |

Quite simply no other CRPG has surpassed Ultima VII's fully realised world.
An intriguing plot full of twists and turns, beautiful graphics (for its time), non-linear gameplay and the ability to truely do what ever you wanted make this game an undeniable classic and quite simply one of the best games ever made.
Oh single player Ultima, how we shall mourn your passing. |

The best of the Ultimas and possibly the best rpg ever! This was the most realistic world that has ever been created. The townspeople all had lives of their own, with distinct personalities. The world was so detailed, you could wander around for hours on end and not accomplish anything, yet still have loads of fun. The music was great. The story was, and still is, one of the best ever written. The games of today may look and sound better, but few have matched the quality and the creativity of this classic game. |

And for all of you thinking on the bakery part.. c'mon!, dont you remember how the guards turn ON/OFF the lightposts?, one of my favorite moments of the game are:
1) teasing guards while turning OFF the lights at night
2) finding THE TREASURE ISLAND, the biggest treasure EVER on the history of CRPGS is there (arround 1000 or more gp, plus lots of glasswords!) |

This game is the Rpg of all Rpg's it just doesnt get anybetter. Im only 17 years old and i got this game when i was about 11 years old maybe younger and i still love this game. Now that exults out i can play it again. Its just so fun and lets u do so many things that even todays games dont do. Such as characters running there own shops, coming home from work, eating by going to the pub and going to bed. They even let u bake bread in this game, or kill animals for food. The story is awesome, and the game play is addictivly fun.
Even with it being old the graphics dont look bad at all.
ultima underworld was also great. I wish they would make more games like this |

Some of the ratings here (1/10) make me doubt that these people have even played U7 and are infact just fanatical fanboy's of a competing RPG trying to bring the average down....for shame!
This aggression will not stand.....man :)
Ultima 7 is an RPG marvel, with a deep involving storyline, npc's full of character and actually playing a part in the game world instead of just standing idle.
Graphically U7 may be a little dated, but this game is nearly 10 or so years old!
But, true classics always age better over time...heh
Try Exult for your best U7 / Win9X / XP results......

You wuld be hard-pressed to find a game as non-linear as this one. The game becomes more and more engaging as the plot is slowly revealed. With everyone speaking olde english, it really feels like i was part of the world. Few modern games can even come close to the amount of freedom in this masterpiece. Almost every game out there can take a lesson from the Black Gate. Its to bad that great game designers like Richard Garriot are far and few inbetween today. |

The technology sucked. It crashed all the time, it ran slow on high end hardware, it was hard to get running. Also the control system and combat was poor, half the time your companions would hit you rather than the enemy. There were lots of little annoyances like having to manually feed your stupid companions all the time, or getting stuck on scenery.
But despite all that it's the 3rd best RPG I've ever played and it easily get's 10/10. It's got a great storyline despite being totally non-linear. The characters and the world are more real than just about any other game, even Planscape Torment doesn't compare.
There are only a handful of other games that I have enjoyed as much as Ultima 7. The game sucked me in and I played nothing else for months. Most of the time when I complete a game I never play it again. But with Ultima 7 I kept on playing until I'd found every secret and completed every sub quest.
Despite the games faults you can really tell that it was a labour of love for the creators. The attention to detail in the environment and plot is something lacking in almost all other games. That's what makes it so special, it more than makes up for the poor game engine.
It's an essential game for anyone who likes RPGs, ignore the primitive graphics and you'll find it's an amazing experience. Thankfully these days it's a lot easier to get running as there's a project to get it working in Windows: http://exult.sourceforge.net/ |

Ultima 7 was and is a milestone in crpg history. The freedom and the story is what made it so great. Rpgs that came afterwards should have learned from it, but few have. The closest game to ultima7 today would be gothic, but if both games were made today, ultima7 would definitely win. This game is a classic and will be remembered for many years to come. |

Ok nowadays it would not get a 10, but given the time, the game was a milestone in gaming history.
Back then it was as perfect as a game could get.

This and part 2 are the best designed RPGs I have ever played. Given the technology for the time, they didn't focus on fancy graphics and instead made a very immersive and detailed world. |

Ultima 7 is probably as good as it gets in CRPG's. For those who have (seemingly) forgotten, RPG stands for Role Playing Game. That is, you take on the role of a character. From that I always inferred that the important thing was playing a role, and to me that meant being able to choose a character, a personality, and play the character according to that, so that means the more freedom to do things, the better (as it can accomodate more personalities).
Ultimately this is where computer games are limited, and Ultima 7 is no exception. It does give a rather unique level of interaction with the game world that I haven't seen in an CRPG since (possibly a rogue-like variant that I haven't seen trumps it). But even still choices are limited, you can't buy a shop, you can't build a castle and try and take over the land, and you can't take up with the Guardian. I'm not saying that it's reasonable to expect these things in a computer game, I'm just explaining why I'm not giving this 10/10.
What was nice about it was the ability to bake, act, go where you want when you want (after you get out of Trinsic of course), the ability to manipulate almost everything.
The NPC were really one of the best things about it. I never got the impression (as I do with most other CRPGs) that the NPCs were there just to further the plot. Every NPC had something to do with it, but they were so ready to offer up so much about their own lives that it made it seem like they were there for themselves and not for you (as most people are). Their day time schedules only added to that. In too many modern RPGs NPCs stay in the one spot all day! A shop-keeper that you can buy stuff off 24/7 simply feels contrived and as if they're there for your benefit and not for their own. (I mean, so what if you're on the quest to retrieve the sword of Holy Bob? Jones the merchant doesn't care; he wants to eat and sleep, and not sell you torches at 1 am--unless of course you drum him out of bed and pay extra.)
The story-line was quite good. However, I think that plenty of other CRPGs have done jut as well. Mind you, one good thing about the story-line that beats most other CRPGs is that large amounts of it didn't involve killing something. I'm not a pacifist, but I get tired of having to endlessly go from point a to b with 1000 orcs being slaughted in between. It's nice and refreshing to have the story-line teased out by talking to people (not just having characters talk at you, which is mostly how it's done in CRPGs now).
Yeah, ok, graphics and sounds are ordinary these days, but back then they were great, and even today after awhile of playing it I can still feel like I'm the character, so it works.
In short: indepth characters who are believable, lots of flexibility in interaction with the world but still not enough to justify the 'role playing game' title, and a nicely done story line. |

Ultima, The father of RPG's as we know them now. RPG developers should have a look at it again and again. ( Ultima 7 and Serpent isle are probably the bests of the serie) |

Dated graphics and limitations of the game engine don't really matter when you've got such an immersive world to explore. The level of freedom and the number of interesting characters put most modern RPGs to shame.
Unlike a lot of older games this lives up to the nostalgic memories of playing it when it first came out. Playing it in Windows using Exult is still a fantastic experience and I'd recommend it to anyone. |
