GamePower has reviewed Anachronox, Ion Storm Dallas' farewell game and has rated the title with 2.5/4 points:
The battle system mimics the Final Fantasy turn-based approach almost exactly, but it, too, is a console RPG convention that Anachronox reduces to bland monotony. Scripted encounters with enemy groups drop us into turn-based mode. You must wait for party members to recover from their last turn before commanding them to attack, use an item, or engage a special skill against the enemy. One refreshing addition to this approach is a movement command, which lets you reposition characters during battle in order to make better use of melee weapons. Otherwise, combat is fairly boring because it lacks the two things that make this model interesting -- creatively designed enemies, and surprising weapons and magic effects. Not only are the foes all-too-familiar beasties and alien clichés, but the only thing that looks at all animated in these battle... |
