MSNBCV has an editorial article entitled Bringing emotions to video games. It's an interesting read with comments from a handful of developers including the ubiquitous Warren Spector:NEW YORK - Imagine this video game scenario: Assigned to rescue the embattled squad you've fought with for the past 10 hours, you fail miserably. You have nothing to show save for a torn piece of clothing, bloody at the edges. As the soundtrack reaches its crescendo and the words “Game Over” materialize over the mists of Planet X, it's not frustration you feel, but regret, sadness, even, for those brave soldiers you left behind. Having meaningful NPCs the player can identify with is probably a good start - something Spector did fairly well in Deus Ex but not in DX:IW in my opinion. The article definitely has a point but the RPG genre probably fairs a little better than most with games like PS:T and Fallout having some moments for me. | Source: Blue's |
