Wonderful Introductory Appeal... however it dies off about 30 minutes into the game when you begin encountering bug after bug after bug. |

The first, and still fun to play (if you can get it to run). Didn't like the journal entries... but loved the feeling of hitting level 5 and getting fireball and showing those damned endless waves of Kobolds who was boss.... |

Although archaic by todays standards this game is still fun to play, if you can run it on your computer and don't lose the annoying code wheel that is used for copy protection. |

Hated the interface. The drop down menu style made me feel like I was at work using Excel. Really took me out of the game. Also had issues with character control. But it was pretty. |

The one that started the "Gold box" series. It had some very large epic battles and I enjoyed it more than most of the later ones.
Other reviewers: don't get this one mixed up with the recent release of a similar name. This is the 1988 one. |

Besides Ultima V and Eye of the Beholder, Pool of Radiance is one of my all time rpg favorites. Great story and I loved SSI's interface. If you can't get any of these old games to work, buy an old commodore amiga with harddisk. games of that time were much better on this platform than on the ms-dos pc's anyway. |

This is THE greatest game ever. Sadly its virtuly unplayable now. But at the time it had no peer, and to this days the memories of the time spent playing do not compare to todays games. Morrowind is close, very close. But it is not D&D. And you have no party to adventure with. My chracter name i have been using in games like DAoC and Everquest are stolen from this game, specificly the pre-generated party on the c-64 version. |

This game got me started in the RPG genre. it was the very first RPG I ever played, on my trusty C64. I don't care what anyone else says, this game is one of the classics of all time. Great player statistics, great story, a fantastic "questmaster" (lack of a better name for the quest office), a beautiful fascinating world, well balanced weapons and armour, intimidating and interesting and VARIED foes, lots of hidden dungeons and special enemies (like the guy in the well in the beginning of the game..), and even some hard-to-solve puzzles. The interface and the loading times were the only bad things about this game. Guess that doesn't apply for the PC version. |

First, I believe some people have reviewed the original Pools of Radiance thinking is was its ill fated sequal -- this game should be MUCH higher on the all-time best RPG list. PoR cemented the RPG genre and really was an ambitious undertaking. The graphics were amazing, the was story great, and the game itself worked around the limitions the hardware of the time imposed rather nicely. |

Ignore the idiots that thought this review was for Pool of Radiance II. POR2 was terrible but POR1 was the first game to showcase how great Dungeons and Dragons RPGs were on the computer. Fans of the early SSI D&D games still have these games. I wish someone could make another blatant turn-based sytem for D&D PC games. |

It was the king of the kill 15 years ago... *sigh* /me is getting old. PoR started the Cycle which was ended by Icewind Dale 2 now. The future is for engines like Neverwinter's, but those who truely played this game back in 1988 will never forget it. |

Can i say EPIC? I played it in my Amiga, and it roxed vs the PC version. The battles were thick. Tension was high as you cast that last fireball into the damn buggers knowing it was make or break, cause your party was almost FUBAR.
And as with most goldboxes, it was worth playing it for the storyline alone.
Kudos to SSI, you shall always be remembered. |

The original, Gold Box one is ... perfect.

What a shame to see this game's overall rating lowered because people are too ignorant to realize that Pool of Radiance TWO (Or rather Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.) is a different game. Man, let me tell ya, there are only three games I remember as a kid on my dinky Radio Shack computer. One was the Sierra adventure series, another was the Ultima series, and the final one was the entire line of SSI's D&D games. The beauty of turn-based combat to the nth degree! I even bought the gold-silver-platinum-whatever-they-were-called collections a few years back just to replay these glories. Loved the entire line but Pool of Radiance will always be my favorite just because it was the first. |

Gold Box: A classic. Cloudkill has never been so much fun. Maps had to be drawn by hand on paper though... Ah, the good ol' times. But c'mon, it was nowhere as good as you all seem to remember. Bard's Tale was THE game!
