RPG Vault has posted Part 1 of an interview series with Stephane Quilichini about NP Cube's Dark and Light, billed as the world's largest MMOG. Here's a snip:
Jonric: Why did you decide Dark and Light would have such a large world? What are the main benefits and drawbacks and how are you creating so much terrain?

Stephane Quilichini: We decided to create such a large world because our concept for the game was to have one only world for the all of our gamers. If two people know each other in real life, they can play together in Dark and Light without asking beforehand on witch server each is on. The principal benefit is the coherence in the game, with a constant mix between new and older gamers.

The two primary challenges are creating such a big world and being able to manage it on one only server nursery, and designing a game that can cope with a small or huge number of gamers the one area, and this in spite of the size of our world. We have developed some in-house tools that permit us to work with real satellite maps to create a real patchwork of terrain. The first testers seem to have already enjoyed discovering our world even at this stage of development.
