Everquest 2 continues the tradition of mmorpg sequels being very bad. Sony seems to have had no clue as to what made Everquest 1 so popular. They removed nearly all freedom of choice from the players and try to hide that fact under a staggering amount of quests. The quests in the game are really the one bright spot. There are literally thousands of quests and nearly all of them work correctly and most are quite fun to do. On the other side of the coin however is the fact that there are 4 archetype classes, but all the subclasses are so interchangeable as to mean that there are really only 4 classes in the game. Races were similarly "balanced" as to be clones of one another so that really, there is only one race, the only real differemce being height. Zone choices are equally poor. The game progression is almost entirely linear. This ends up meaning that at whatever level you are, there are a very limited number of places to go to play and you will be sharing those with literally everyone else on the server, so zone overcrowding has been a real issue. And there is a quest to complete for most zones before you can even set food inside, this gets really tedious after the first few. And the worst thing about the game is how easy it is. Sony felt the need to hold the player's hand through everything. There is no wondering how tough any certain monster or group of monsters is going to be, they've laid all the numbers out for everyone to see. I played for a month, nealy maxed both adventuring and crafting levels and called it quits, theres just nothing there to hold interest.

Very addictive, very beautiful and overall just fun. I enjoyed the beta and am now enjoying the retail even more. There is lots to explore and lots of quests to do with decent rewards. I give this game a 9.

Hey john, eq2 isn't supposed to be like eq1, and that is the whole point- SOE is catering to the 2 million plus ppl who played eq1 and quit, those ppl like me who did'nt like eq1 enough to keep playing. With all the new patching being put into the game to make the game less rat whomping grinding and more fun, I like it morte and more than eq1. If you want a game that plays like eq1, then well.... play EQ!

This game originally showed promise, but fell short. The graphics are impressive. Combat is exciting. There is lots of content and lots of places to go. But it's not wrapped into a story line of any sort. There is no customization of your character. Crafting is a pain! You have to make each component one at a time, there is no way to produce in bulk. Over all I give it an average raiting because the promissing design fell short of the hype.

EQ2 (as of April 2006) has much more to offer than it's chief competitors Wow and COV if you can get past it's poorly documented design changes. EQ2 at launch had tons of great content buried beneath poorly implemented features. I gave it a 6 out of 10 then. Now they've fixed most of that, using ideas from World of Warcraft and City of Heroes. They will be redoing the tradeskill system to make it less tedious, but it's already more rewarding than Wow. I am continually finding amazing new things about the game. Worth a try, and worth coming back to if you didn't like it before.
