Great game that helped bring RPG's back into the spotlight. This would have recieved a higher rating but even though the world you explore is incredibly large you spend a large amount of time just walking around with nothing to do other than look at the scenery. |

A good RPG, and we owe a lot to it for reviving the genre after some very slow years. Unfortunately the german version I played had some very awful voiceovers. Personally I beleive the game would have been better without the D&D rules. Also the NPC interaction was a bit basic, mostly all possible answers ended up with them fighting you anyway. Still a must-have title. |

Just when you thought playing Ultima Underworld 2 for the 3rd time though would be your only way to experience good RPG on your pc again. BG was a welcome site on the shelf. Worth every penny of the $45 I paid for it. |

I thought, and still think Baldurs Gate is one of thee best if not THE best Isometric RPG to date. As for 3D RPGs... Well lets just say many have come close but none have taken the cake. :) |

For the final city Baldurs Gate i would give a rating of 10, but before that lies a long journey that is sometimes very boring. Baldurs Gate 2 & Planescape Torment are much better. |

I was rather deceived by this licensed AD&D game. Even though you're not forced through a linear path, everytime you play the game you'll end up doing the same things in basically the same order... The game seems too angled on fighting rather then roleplaying. |

The thing I liked most about this game is that it lets you be evil. I think being a solo-evil elf contributed the the challange and made me want to play longer than I would have normally. If you follow the normal plot-line the game can be quite boring though. |

Somehow, although this game has its flaws and is not as good as its successor, I like this game a little bit more than BGII. The story is more compelling ( you start as an orphan, discover your heritage, save Baldur's Gate ) than that of BGII ( you hunt a wizard ). I also like to explore. The game was innovative, exciting and has nice graphics ( but the dungeons are bad ). And it was the answer to a lot of prayers from desperate CRPG-gamers. For ending the RPG-drought it gets an extra bonus from me. All in all, I award it ten points. |

If not the best CRPG to date, it certainly was one of the most important ones. Extremely long in scope. Better than its sequel in terms of role-playing in that it intentionally curbed out-of-control levelling and powergaming. |

I got to the 3rd chapter, got bored, and quit playing. I was much happier playing Might and Magic VI at the time, and it was one of the worse games in the series. I tried playing BG again after I had beaten M&M6, but I still couldn't get into it. |

The first chapter of the BG saga is very good.
Althought there are a few game stopping bugs (ex; the boots of speed that don't activate certains essential triggers).
Good story. Good intrigue.
A great introduction to the BG world and thye IE games.

loved the pacing of this game, the world had some life and atmosphere to it, some good and varied battles, some cool production values to help bring the story to life, although I didn't exactly enjoy the story...I realy wanted to love this game... But.... one sore spot for me(and my biggest complaint about the gaming industry in general) that really detracted from the experiance was some of the silly, juvenile dialog and events that i ran into frequently as i tried to play this game. i take my RPG gaming very seriously... and sadly most games produced don't seem to cater to a more sophisicated adult player, this game just took it too far. |

Would have gotten a 9 if it werent for the lack of intriguing sidequests and the bad designdecison to put the big city Baldurs Gate in the end of the game full of not-so-fun fedex sidequests, and on top of that a boring and meanless labyrinth before the endbattle adding even more to the anticlimax. AND ON TOP OF THAT a real bad ending: no fun narrative, no fun movie, no fun nothing after the otherwise great endbattle. Besides that BG was a fantastic and imaginative epic RPG which I enjoyed much. |

It helped to revive the CRPG genre, but just didn't work for me. Nice graphics and sound, but the gameplay and the story telling was bit weak. Lots to explore, but there wasn't really much to do. But then again the engine was great, and the sequel was way better game than the BG1, and the same engine was used in Planescape Tornment one of my all time favourite CRPGs. so BG was not a bad game at all :) |

Baldur's gate is THE RPG GAME.
It is my all time favourite game.
For many hours I enjoyed myself roaming The Forgotten Realms. Despite the fact that maybe Baldur's gate 2 was much bigger I will never forget teh pure genuine fun I had playing this instant Classic.
I think it is a big mistake from Black Isle to end the Baldudur's gate saga because it could last for years (it happens in a kinds of genre's)
So for those who haven't played it yet (do they exist???) buy it, play it, live it, enjoy it!!

Had a lot of fun elements but one thing that really got me with this game was it was too much random roaming. Now I know some people absolutely love that but I buy RPGs to get into the story first, not cover three screens of trees and grass waiting for something to happen. Still, when you were in critical areas or plot changing points of the game, it was one great adventure. My advice though is to buy the sequel which improved on everything that was lacking in the original. BG1 is still a fun game though today and can compete with most of today's newest releases. |

The game that reignited the AD&D RPG flame that burnt out long ago. Not rated highly by many. Personally, BG has more down-to-earth feel than its later and more highly rated sequel. While the story is a bit tired, being in the basic kill-the-foozle vein, it is paced really well. BG also has more of the feel of being in the real place. In contrast, BGII feels a bit more like taking a week-long Europe tour, spending maybe 4 hours each in London, Paris, and all the major continental cities. You get to see all the sights, but don't really feel like being there. |

Strongest part of BG, for me, was probably the humorous comments of some of the characters.
Unfortunately that did not make up for poor graphics/animations, uninteresting story, linearity and poor combat handling.
Seriously overrated.

As others have said, it revived RPGs! A true classic! Can only ask it have more to explore and more complicated NPCs, but they did a perfect job with whay they used. It entertained me too much though, so must give it a 10. |

itīs ok generally, but storyline could be more thrlling (see torment!) and the dialogues are bit too eez. graphics are nice for that time and the game has definitely the :"just one more fight, so i can buy me tha new sword!" factor... |

When I played it I felt like I was playing some kind of a bigger Diablo. It's not very original, but it's nicely made. In this style I much prefer Planescape:Torment though. Also it aged badly. |

I played it just a year ago. Graphics are still ok. Very good story and atmosphere. Very good real time fights which can anytime stopped with an active pause to give your characters orders if the going gets tough. |

How did Bioware acheive such an immersion without letting you attain megalomanic levels and even level 1 or 2 floundering around was fun? I do not know and I probably never will. Nevertheless, BG is one of the best cRPGs and perhaps games in general out there... |
