Interplay: Financial Woes

Interplay, publisher of the highly acclaimed Baldur's Gate series (and many many other titles) has published its Q3/2001 financial results. The operating loss for Q3/2001 was US$19.0 million versus an operating profit of US$1.1 million in the same period a year ago.

The following snip sort of explains the steep income decrease (read the full press release for more details):
    ...Last year the Company released 5 new titles in the third quarter and 26 new titles year-to-date, while this year the Company released no new titles in the third quarter and 7 new titles year-to-date. In addition, the release of lower priced new PC titles and the Company's PC based back-catalogue business resulted in lower gross profit margins compared to last year. The lower gross profit margins in the current year also reflect increased product returns and price concessions as the Company prepares for transitioning its North American distribution to Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing as well as provisions charged to cost of goods sold for impaired prepaid royalties to developers on discontinued projects of $5.9 million in the third quarter and $8.1 million year-to-date...
