RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Bob Kraus has rated the following games:

Kult: Heretic Kingdoms: 9/10 points

Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition --- The game formerly known as Kult! This is a GREAT game for hardcore RPG fans who like stats and skills. Don't pay attention to any bad reviews! The attunement system used in the game is a brilliant new invention: it (finallly) gives you a reason to actually USE almost every different type of weapon and armor (in order to unlock their attunements). Also the Dreamworld is cool and it gives you a good reason to go over all of the terrain a second time: you must find the hex marks in the dreamworld which greatly aid in advancing your 4 basic skill levels (melee, ranged, magic, speed), and also to kill more (spirit) monsters to gain their essence, which greatly aids in unlocking attunements; also some NPC's appear only in the dreamworld. Great story line and plenty of good side quests and lots of good NPC's. Incidentally, if you play correctly, you can max out at least 3 of the 4 skills by the time you reach the end of the game (I ignored the "ranged" skill). Actually you only need to use two: choose your favorite out of melee, magic, ranged, and also do speed. Also you can easily unlock all of the attunements that go with your playing style (and lots of others also). And you can complete all of the quests (although a few have various outcomes). Now sure there are a few weak points: slow travel: you can't normally run (actually you can with the "fleet of foot" attunement but only while using the Air element), and really long load times (made frustrating when you accidentally move onto a map's exit point - there's no "do you want to exit" choice). And combat is very simple - a mixed blessing! - (but preparing for combat with the right attunements is a worthwhile endeavor). The most annoying thing is the amount of time it takes to move items in and out of your personal inventory (but moving between bags is very fast, so we know they can do it!). Also a few very minor programming glitches (be sure to get the U.S. patch 1.5). But all of this is insignificant in view of the great gameplay. It's an absolute must! Hopefully there will be many (improved) sequels!
