Recently, we had the chance to ask some questions to Pete Hines from Bethesda Softworks about their upcoming RPG gem Morrowind. I'll put these six questions and answers up here:
1) What's the team doing at the moment? How far have they gotten squashing the remaining bugs?
Testing testing testing. We've come a very long way in terms of finding and fixing problems, and the team has accomplished an amazing amount of work in this area. Obviously there's still more to go, but we're confident we can complete what's left, especially given our progress to date.
2) Can we expect some performance improvements for the final version, compared with the preview version sent out to the editors?
Obviously as you go through and fix problems in a game, you can expect changes in performance. We are constantly looking for ways to optimize performance and speed things up whenever it's possible...whether that be load times or framerates.
3) Are you thinking of releasing the Morrowind soundtrack seperately? The title theme by Jeremy Soule is just great, it would deserve a seperate relase.
The Morrowind soundtrack is provided on a separate CD in the Morrowind Collector's Edition, which is available both in North America and in Europe (through Ubi Soft).
4) Any other Morrowind merchandise planned?
The Collector's Edition also features a full-color, 48-page book called The Art of Morrowind that features concept art and sketch art from the game, and a very detailer pewter figurine of the Ordinator that was done by Rawcliffe. Besides the Collector's Edition, we have a whole host of Morrowind items offered through Cafe Press. You can find them at http://www.cafepress.com/mwstore/ .
5) Do you see the possibility that you will license the Morrowind engine so that other commercial games could use it? Are you planning to do a sequel?
Well, the engine we use for Morrowind is actually a modified version of NDL's Net Immerse engine. We have plans for the series after Morrowind, but we aren't talking about them right now. Our goal is to make Morrowind the best game it can be and get it out to fans as soon as possible.
6) Finally a question about food in the game: Is there a need to eat in order to keep your character healthy and agile?
Eating helps restore you Health or Fatigue. You can also eat all of the ingredients you find in the world and, depending on your Alchemy skill, you may experience the special effect that eating the ingredient provides. It could be something like the ability to walk on water or restore Health, or it could be harmful, like draining Intelligence. Ingredients can also be used in potions, which brings out additional properties they may contain. So, you don't NEED to eat, but it does help.
