Baldur's Gate: 9/10 points |
The first in a series of great games. Memorable characters, Forgotten Realms setting can be felt in all aspects of the game, very advanced for the technology at the time. |
Diablo: 8/10 points |
When it came out, it was revolutionary. The music, the fluid animated characters and monsters, the voices, the isometric view, the random equipment. You could feel the sorrow in Tristram ... And the actual backstory was pretty good. It stays hack and slash, but at the time, it felt like the best game in the world. |
Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna: 5/10 points |
Just more Dungeon Siege. As an expansion to DS, I compare it to Diablo 2: Lords of destruction. And the comparison is not flattering: no real new feature worth mentioning, but the graphics are ok. They could have added party management (more than one character at a time) in multiplayer, but they didn't.
Pros: Continuous world, nice items.
Cons: No role-playing, just shop, equip, attack and heal. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 10/10 points |
I always come back to it. I don't think there's a better way to put it. It's a real RPG, escapism at its best. Advice: try to forget the mechanics behind the leveling up, don't even try to optimize your character; just enjoy the ride. Character graphics, performance and sounds could be better, but the ability to mod and add to the game is almost infinite. Single player means no annoying l33t or n3wb, and a consistant world. |
Freelancer: 7/10 points |
Although it's a good action game, it's not really an RPG. Interaction with other characters is very limited and generic. The universe is diverse but the ships are completely unbalanced between systems. Can be fun for a couple of hours in multiplayer, but there is no long term goal because enemies respawn continually. Gets old real fast. |
Gothic: 9/10 points |
Very cool clans, lots of freedom, nice sky! |
Neverwinter Nights: 9/10 points |
Pros: You can make your own modules, scripting, spells, etc and distribute them easily. Ultra flexible system.
Cons: Lack of a continuous game world (a la Dungeon Siege) removes almost all immersion from the game. |
Pool of Radiance: 7/10 points |
Gold Box: A classic. Cloudkill has never been so much fun. Maps had to be drawn by hand on paper though... Ah, the good ol' times. But c'mon, it was nowhere as good as you all seem to remember. Bard's Tale was THE game!

Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor: 4/10 points |
Really buggy, crappy interface, partial 3E ruleset, there is nothing that would make me want to play that game again. Ok, it's better that the old gold box games by SSI, but 10 years later, you would expect that. |
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 9/10 points |
This game is FUN! Maybe it's the setting, maybe it's the characters, the lightsabers, or even the graphics. The possibility to play light or dark side adds replayability. Definitely a well crafted game. |
Ultima 9 - Ascension: 8/10 points |
Although buggy, this game was like a Morrowind ancestor. You could go almost anywhere in the world, pick up all kinds of spell components, etc. Nice story (predictable but entertaining), lots of various locales to explore, virtues to uphold, treasures to discover... I don't understand why it got such a low rating. |
Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption: 8/10 points |
Pros: Very close to the table-top game, entertaining story, eras are well chosen, graphically beautiful.
Cons: End boss is ridiculously strong. Making your own modules (an advertised feature) almost impossible. |
