Rend's Rants: January

A month is over, and so it's time for me again to talk about what was and what will be. I am happy to say that (once again) the last month was the most successful ever for RPGDot, with more than 100.000 unique visitors and more than 500.000 pageviews (not counting reloads). In addition, our Gothic site received an additional 100.000 pageviews this month. Kudos to Gorath for running it, it is by far the most popular international Gothic site out there.

Size does matter, at least in two aspects: advertising income and bandwidth usage *g*. We are starting to attract campaigns to the site, which eases our financial pain a little bit. We were able to pay our overheads from advertising income this month, maybe we will be able to do so again in February. But because size matters in bandwidth and processor usage, too, we decided to buy a bigger server for the site this month. The server is up and running (4 times more RAM to make our database run faster, 3 times more processor speed and a second harddisk for backups), and we will begin the transfer of the sites shortly (we were working in the backgound for three weeks on that). It might be that our coverage will be a little bit less complete during the transition, but as a compensation for that, Myrthos revamped our database and search engine to make it faster and easier to use.

Two changes come to my mind instantly: the search engine is now working properly, and you will be able to comment not only per article, but also per game. This way, we hope to build a collection of opinions by gamers about games - something that might help you to decide if a game is worth your attention or not. There are other refinements. Our game shop will be useful for people outside the US, info about games will pop up in a seperate window, the news layout will change slightly. All in all, I think the changes will be useful for you, the visitor.

During February, we will stop taking donations and offer a new service for those who want to help us to survive and to grow. We call the program "friends of RPGDot", and while, of course, our content will be free for all, those in the program will receive additional goodies and possibilities with RPGDot and our game sites (more of them to come soon).

We here at RPGDot are really looking forward to the coming months. Not only because a lot of new, cool RPG's are on their way, but because we believe that we are on the right track with what we do. It is still enormous fun to serve you RPG news and background info, and it is still a pleasure to be in close contact with our readers. Granted, sometimes I'd rather relax for a day or two, not thinking about where to find news worth reporting, but on the other hand this has become an integrated part of my life (and of the lives of the other members here), and as long as the feedback is as great as it is, we will continue to serve you with greatest pleasure. Have fun, keep visiting us and (that would be our greatest pleasure) feel at home...
