They are mages who can cast new spells, like Nahal's Reckless Dwoemer. Their spells have a 5% chance to have an unpredictable - sometimes good, sometimes bad - effect. For example, a spell gone awry might turn the caster into a squirrel, or change the target's sex! Source: RPGVault
