ActionVault has posted a preview of Purge, the online RPG/shooter hybid. Here's a part from that article:
The levelling aspect of Purge is primarily what sets it apart form its run-and-gun or tactically-oriented contemporaries. The character advancement system that is in place revolves around rewarding player kills, the damage of the enemy's portal and the repair of your own with experience points. The precise number awarded differs according to the AI-perceived difficulty of the task, with the HUD keeping a running tally of accumulated experience points on the right hand side of the display. When a player gains a level, the seven constituent traits of their character are boosted; this has the knock-on effect of improving their skill proficiency, and eventually, grants access to some of the higher order skills. A possible imbalance arising out of the character development mechanism could have been the potential gulf between freshly spawned players and server veterans, but Freeform has implemented level reset functionality whereby each player loses their accumulated levels when a new map is loaded. There is a server persistence option that administrators may toggle on, but presently it is rather buggy, sometimes causing the host machine to become unstable. They are talking about the current public beta, of course. |
