A new Eschaton Online Development Report (the second one) has been posted at ActionVault. Project Lead Jake Cannell talks abouut player-run governments in the game:
One of the most interesting aspects of Eschaton is the notion of player-run nations. The concept is not entirely new; as several text-based MUDs and lesser known graphical MUDs have featured player governments in some form. And there are a couple of major persistent worlds on the horizon employing the idea, such as Shadowbane with its warring city-states. There is a certain inherent tendency to stick to the tried and true, and it's easy to see this in the numerous upcoming persistent worlds that focus on hack & slash PvE (player vs environment) gameplay. The success of EverQuest validated that basic game design beyond any reasonable doubt. Its also interesting to note that Sony's next immediate project, Star Wars Galaxies, seems to take more inspiration from Ultima Online than EverQuest, and will give players some options for greater control in the form of managing their own towns. I think that the most successful designs in this maturing medium will gravitate increasingly towards player managed politics, economics and social structures. |
