RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Nik has rated the following games:

Divine Divinity: 2/10 points

Yuck - I hated this game, the graphics were dire. It had continuous loading sequences and the game play stank. And just to top it off, it's one of those great games where you get killed in almost every encounter with evil things so you better get used to saving and reloading - why this scores better than NWN in this chart I'll never know.

Dungeon Siege: 6/10 points

I liked dungeon siege, it was fun and really pretty to look at. But unfortunately also completely mindless - it's all hack and slash with the exception of a couple of really basic puzzles. Tactics are really straightforward and you don't much notice (or care) when your characters level up - apart from dressing them in nice new armour or giving them bigger sticks to hit things with. You won't bond with your character at all and don't waste anytime trading - just flog all the equipment you don't want and move on, all the best stuff is just lying around on dungeon floors to pick up. The game is very linear - just head forward - kill everything in your way and it shouldn't take more than a day or two to finish. With a bit of luck DS2 will be a big improvement over this nice but essentially repetitive game.

Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 6/10 points

My missus would seriously disagree with my rating she's played Morrowind and it's expansions for countless hours and loved every minute of it. I can see why people like it, the graphics are fantastic - you're free to explore a world in your own way and your own time, with lots of quests if you want but if you just want to kill and steal you can. But... the frame rate is awful and I'm running a FX5900 128MB card, it makes me want to puke after about half an hour of play. Character development is equally slow and it's just not rewarding enough when there are 100 skill levels for everything. The quests are all a little samey after a while and the conversations start to get really tedious too. So, all in all you can see the future in Morrowind and it rocks... but Elder Scrolls 3 isn't quite there yet. It will however be one of those games like Elite that change the face of gaming forever. As for me I think I'll stick to KOTOT or Neverwinter Nights until the future arrives.

Neverwinter Nights: 10/10 points

Quite simply the greatest RPG of all time, totally immersive, character classes that actually are different rather than just minor changes. Hours of puzzles and quests, combat that's realistic enough but doesn't kill you so often that it ruins the atmosphere - I don't want to keep re-loading in a game it spoils the effect. Great subquests (including class specific for replayability), awesome spells, level ups that bring obvious and real advantages to your character (unlike Morrowind for example). I could go on and on about this one.. and sadly that's my only criticism of NWN it just wasn't long enough - the first expansion pack didn't help much either (you don't use your original character... aarghh!) and in the second expansion you can use your original character but everybody acts like your performance in the first game was done by somebody else (double arrgghh!) Still, minor grumbles if you don't have this game - get it. And why on earth is this game at like 50th place on this board? Considering some of the rubbish above it?

Pool of Radiance - Ruins of Myth Drannor: 10/10 points

I don't know what everyone else here is complaining about the game won't run under XP very well but I bought it about 3 years ago ran it under ME and it was fantastic - a couple of minor bugs. But it was speedy and the most atmospheric game I'd ever played up to that point. I love the ability to run a 6 character party (and you actually need all the characters at some point or other in the game), the turn based combat worked for me and it took absolutely weeks to complete and there are still sub quests I'd love to go back and complete. Alright, it looks a bit dated now but if somebody polished it up and released a real (i.e. party based) sequel they could have my dosh tomorrow. It's not the best RPG of all time but for it's day it was certainly a big improvement over Baldurs Gate, IceWind Dale, Ultima etc.

Sacred: 7/10 points

It was fun, the whole hack and slash without thought gets a bit boring in the end though. And it is extremely buggy and for some reason it gets easier every time you start again (even using a new character) so you play once and the game becomes impossible to play when you reach level 10 or so, then you start again and you can't get past level 20, so you start again and so on... I played it for about 30 hours and gave up in the end but it wasn't bad and hopefully the gold release with the expansion will have sorted most of the niggles

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords: 5/10 points

Oh, ecce me! (as my Latin teacher used to say). What a disappointment, I loved KOTOR and couldn't wait for this but it's clear that the developer was in such a rush to meet it's release deadlines they had to drop what was a really promising game half way through. It was supposed to be longer than KOTOR but it took me less than 10 hours to complete - including almost all the side quests. The ending was pants, beyond pants in fact - it just stopped no explanation, nothing - maybe they're angling for a sequel but it had better be better than this. The graphics and general game play were almost untouched from the original and due to dire AI, almost every "Boss" style enemy can be beaten by hiding slightly behind a pillar and then grenaded and or "force"d to death. Bleah!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 9/10 points

Loved it, great characterisation, awesome plot, good turn based combat, fantastic score and Star Wars too. And thankfully no sign of Jar Jar Binks or Ewoks!

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines: 3/10 points

Could have been great - really wasn't. Full of bugs - maybe patched versions will be better but I don't need this in a game on day of purchase where almost every graphic is faulty. Lousy frame rate leaves me feeling nauseous. The game starts well in terms of plot etc. but becomes dull half way through as yet again a development team rush to meet an artificial deadline. I liked the original Vampire game, it was fun if a little basic and had high hopes for this but they've been quashed.
