Gamespy has posted a preview of Horizons - Empires of Istaria. Here's an interesting bit about character creation in this upcoming MMORPG:
It was Artifact President David Bowman who gave us the guided tour of the game, starting with the options players will have when creating an online persona. "You want millions of combinations so that people can all look and feel different," Bowman said. To that end, one feature players can look forward to is the ability to "bulk up" parts of their character by changing the muscularity. You can give your character giant arms and stocky legs, a narrow waist and huge hips, or any combination you feel like. You can even change the look of your character through in-game means. "I'm not sure who wants to be an obese character in the game," Bowman said, fattening up his character until she had a gut like a beachball, "but I'm going to give people that option."
Another customization tool is "tintable" clothing. Instead of having different art resources for every different color of clothes available, the Horizons engine allows users to change the color, brightness, and saturation of any piece of clothing -- instead of a few dozen color combinations, the choices are now almost limitless. Even more importantly, clothing can be layered. You can put a red vest over a white undershirt and it'll show through. Put on some light armor and your clothes will show underneath. "Right now we can go ten layers deep," explained Bowman. Between the body shape and the clothing options, nearly every character in the game can look unique.
