AllRPG has written up a preview of Sea Dogs 2, Akella's upcoming naval RPG. Here's an excerpt:

Players also will be very pleased to learn that they now can choose their own character, selecting either the male corsair Blaze Devlin or female corsair Daniel Grin, as well as control a party of 4 (which includes 3 other NPCs) characters and a fleet of 4 ships (presumably controlled by the 3 other NPCs). The character creation will also be detailed, allowing the player to select the sex of his character as well as a specialty that will affect skill growth. Skills include generalities such as Fencing and Navigation, and several specializations. The character can also now arm himself with two different kinds of weapons: firearms (pistols and the such), and cold steel (like rapiers). Firearms will usually fire first in a combat round and can be used only once, while the cold steel weapons can be used constantly and offer increased damage in hand-to-hand situations.

The economic structure of the game is also more appealing as well. In Sea Dogs, most of the merchandise available for purchase served little reason except to sap unsuspecting players of their money. According to Akella, Sea Dogs II won't have these sort of problems. There will be 26 different types of goods, as well as the ability to smuggle goods and establish a Slave Trade. But you won't make any friends through the slave trade, and it is possible that good-hearted alllies of yours make break ties if they find out you've been smuggling human cargo.
