You can find an interview with Lead Artist Fritz at Freeform Interactive LLC, talking about their FPS/RPG multiplayer hybrid Purge (the public beta has started four days ago). Here's a bit:
G.: "Can you tell us something about the development of the game so far? What was the funniest and what was the most frustrating thing?"

F.: "The base idea of Purge goes back in the days when Quake1 was published. We made a Total Conversation called Future versus Fantasy (for short FvF) which was very popular in the United States. With Team Fortress, FvF was one of the most played Quake modifications these days. A lot of these old FvF classes and popular things have found its way into Purge, although Purge isnt a real sequal of FvF.

We are currently using the Talon engine from Lithtech. We were able to improve the engine, especially network code. It can handle now up to 32+ players with almost no lag. So all the complains people had with previous released games ala Alien versus Predator 2 and Global Ops are history. The engine is capable to render even large outdoor maps on older machines at high frame rates. So people with older PCs and those spending not much in new hardware are able to play Purge since the engine requirements on hardware arevery low.
Funny things!? Hmm can`t remember right now. Developing a game isnt fun at all, its hard work...endless hours of work, less (almost no) sleep. But our goal is to develope something in the end that is fun to play.

Frustrating...it`s frustating to see that still too many players know to less about the gameplay when they start the first time and than run frustrated away saying this game sucks, since they expected a shooter or a MMORPG or simply don`t understand whats going on. Purge mixes elements from a FPS game with RPG and even some RTS elements...and its important that you know atleast about the basic Purge game mechanics before you start. So I please everyone invest a couple of minutes at the manual section, you can find that info on the official website (http://www.purgeonline.net/). Just changing the resolution and key settings after installation isn`t enough for playing Purge...atleast not for the real fun."
