In Memoriam (2.64 MB)
Composer Ben Houge about this RPGDot exclusive track: "In Memoriam was the second piece I wrote for Arcanum (after the main  theme). We were still determining our musical direction, and in the end we never found a good place to use this piece in the game. I was attempting to demonstrate a few coloristic approaches to writing for string quartet, such as  the plucked pizzicato sections, the harmonics of the first violin's ostinato midway through the piece, the ending chord played sul ponticello (i.e., near the  bridge of the instruments), and the use of mutes (in the lower three parts  beneath the ostinato). There's nothing wrong with your speakers; this piece has plenty of silence in it. I was thinking a bit of John Cage and Arvo Part at the  time I was writing it. "In Memoriam" is dedicated to my colleague David Henry, although he's not dead yet. I hope you enjoy it!"
