A new preview of Shadwbane has been posted at IGN today. This is something about how you start your life in this upcoming MMORPG:
You start on what is informally called Newbie Island. It's a safe continent with enough treasure and monsters to get your character up to about 15th or 20th level and is also mercifully free of the player-versus-player action that exists elsewhere in the world. (Experienced players or egotists can skip the island altogether if they like.) Newbie Island may focus on more familiar play styles in contrast with the rest of the game, but it sets up a new social pattern that runs throughout.
The team builds a strong sense of community among the players by localizing their experiences. The idea is that your game will be centered on the Tree you're currently bound to and the city around it. As you keep being pulled back to the city (for selling, respawning, chatting, etc.) you'll start to get to know the community of players around you. Todd says that this method is an unequivocal success. Not only does it help forge relationships that grow into the guilds, it also provides the players with a sense of territoriality when another group comes in and attacks their city or its citizens. |
