RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Jonathan Harrison has rated the following games:

Deus Ex: 10/10 points

Warren Spector, ex-Looking Glasser and brain behind or partly behind The Ultima Underworlds, System Shock and Thief, has done it again! With his newest game, Deus Ex, he manages to create a world so real that it is hard to believe it isn't. Pool balls richochet around the table until the game is finished, water fountains heal (a little), ATM machines can be hacked, and life in general is not too different from life here (yes, there is a real world out there somewhere)...with the one exception that most of us are not agents with the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition, and neither are we involved in a desperate race to save the world. With an unashamed conservative perspective and uninhibited gameplay, Deus Ex ranks with Gothic, Thief, Thief Gold and System Shocks I & II as one of the few games to even (or so I hear) be played beyond the pearly gates.

Gothic: 10/10 points

All hail Piranha Bytes! A few years ago thirteen computer programmers got together and decided to make a "really good RPG." Instead, they gave us one of the greatest role-playing games ever to grace the PC. Astonishing as Gothic is in light of the fact that it was the group's first game, even more astonishing is that it is a landmark n gaming history worldwide. With unprecedented AI, interaction, realism, three different camps to choose from (you are assigned different quests depending on whom you join) and a story that just doesn't quit, Gothic is a must play for anyone who considers himself a role-player!

System Shock 2: 10/10 points

System Shock II is an incredible game. The folks at Looking Glass have once again given us a game that is revolutionary, deep and innovative. A worthy sequel to the original System Shock, System Shock II is the only game I have played that I literally could not tear myself away from. Recommended without reservation!

Thief - The Dark Project: 10/10 points

I kneel before Looking Glass Studios. They have already given us Ultima Underworlds I and II, Terra Nova, System Shock and Flight Unlimited, and now they cement their godlike status with Thief: The Dark Project. The most suspenseful game I have ever played, Thief incorporates the player into a life of thievery in a sometimes squalid, sometimes forboding medieval environment. With an epic storyline and the smartest AI seen on the PC to this day, Thief is a must play for (I am not kidding here) anyone who has fingers. Thief Gold, which is the director's cut version of this game, incorporates three planned missions which were cut due to time constraints as well as DromEd, Looking Glass' in-house mission editor, among other goodies! Worth the buy even if you own the first (I did!)!

Thief 2 - The Metal Age: 9/10 points

Thief II, while incorporating most of the elements that made the original Thief such a success, simply does not recreate the feel of the original. The sheer terror, forboding missions and dark storyline are tossed aside for mechanical monsters and tile floors. The City has gone modern, and you may or may not like it. With bots that search and claws that catch / and cannonballs to crush and smash / you will probably find, as I did, that you will find yourself coming back to Thief: The Dark Project more than Thief II. However, toward the end of this game the missions take a dramatic turn for the better, with some of the best Thief missions ever occuring in the third quarter of the game. Even taking these brilliant missions into account, there is nothing quite on par with the original Thief's Return to the Cathedral in here, and you will likely find yourself regretting it. This aside, I still recommend without further reservation that you DO buy this game. It is simply a classic must-play game from Looking Glass Studios (otherwise known as God).
