XGR has posted a short review of Nival's Etherlords 2. With a score of 81%, here's a snip:The first thing that I noticed about the game is that it is in full, lush 3D, not 2D like many of the other turn based RPG’s. This adds another level to the game that many 2D miss. Allowing full 3D movement of the camera gives the sense of scale in the world. With 3D also comes all the beautify graphics that one has come to expect in games now. The combat is where most of these graphics are put to the test. Combat is not done by the hero’s, but by the cards that the hero holds and summons. Each summon has its own ether cost and this is drawn from the hero’s ether reserves. When a creature, spell, or artifact is summoned a spectacular light show is displayed by the hero. This really impressed me the first couple of times that it happened, but as the game went on, the show becomes repetitive, seeing the same thing numerous times. Combat does become more strategic as the game progresses. Different types of enemies take on different strategies and you must play accordingly or you will lose. This is what I really like about the game, its not mindless combat to see who has the strongest creature. Like I said before, I have been defeated by creatures with much less level experience then what my hero had. But combat isn’t enough for today’s gamers, we need story. |
