German print mag PC Games features an exclusive Gothic 2 preview in their latest issue. I´ll summarize some pieces of this two page article. Please note that all the following info, except one small piece, is taken from PC Games 05/2002. If you can read German the article is highly recommended.
Story: It turns out the Sleeper you defeated in Gothic 1 was the favourite pet of an evil god. (info: according to my Gothic 1 manual this should be Beliar, the god of darkness and death; ed.) Of course he is not amused. Now you are in a country in ruins after the war against the Orcs and on the most wanted list of a superior enemy... Technical infos: The world is 3x as big, still diverse and packed with details, which makes it as immersive as part one. Texture resolution is 4x higher. The strong monster AI, one of Gothic´s most innovative features, will be further improved. Character development: The days of the almighty superhero warriormage are over! Warriors fight, mages cast spells. Careers mentioned in the article are mercenary, paladin and mage. Every class can manufacture its own equipment if the required raw material is available. Fights: Fighting is much more comfortable than in Gothic 1. You can easily aim at multiple opponents or side step their attacks. Quests: Many quests will have multiple solutions, like in Gothic. The innovation for Gothic 2 is that some quests have more than one perspective. For example a paladin would be ordered to enforce a claim while a mercenary would be hired to prevent this. Misc.: Of course the usual promises for a sequel can also be found in this preview: faster loading times, less bugs, better handling. Conclusion: The previewer thinks if Piranha Bytes stay on track they will have a hit in their hands which will surely be competitive in the international markets. Release date: Release date of the German version is October 2002, publisher JoWooD Productions.
