This was mainly because missions revolved around keeping these hero units alive. They're going to change this around a little bit with the ability to resurrect dead heroes. This should allow players the opportunity to take their heroes out into battle without the worry of losing them. And this is a very cool thing because the heroes all have some pretty cool looks, attacks, and spells that can be gained through the advancement of levels.
