Gamespy have posted a fairly big first impressions of Star Wars Galaxies based on the early experiences of half a dozen of their staffers. Interestingly, their comments range from the very positive to the "shouldn't have been released in this state", so even members of the same website can't substantially agree. Here's some comments from one of their lead programmers:
I'm currently carving out a niche as an architect, ultimately hoping to produce factories to supply a group of crafter-friends who are also playing, along with building player-houses and possibly taking part in a player-run city. This is a huge departure from the standard "kill a rat and get a coin, repeat." of EverQuest and it's immensely satisfying to be able to progress by actually adding to the in-game community. Almost all of my in-game money has been made by actually selling the items I've crafted to other players, as opposed to mechanically slaughtering newbie creatures.
Now, who knows how I'll feel about it in a couple months when the bloom is off the rose. There's real potential here, though. The biggest problem right now is that the game is currently really buggy. It's obvious that the game wasn't ready to release, but scuttlebutt has it that the word came down from LucasArts that the game was shipping regardless. I don't know if that's true, but the result is that they're now patching every couple days with the latest fixes. The result is that there's a kind of "avoid the bug!" meta-game going on right now. |
