Blizzard runs an own multiplayer service a.k.a Battle.net which offers an original product verification via a unique CD key which is checked for its uniqueness everytime a gamer logs in. BNETD doesn't have any mechanism that prevents gamers from joining a multiplayer game with the "gold edition" of a Blizzard game.
