An excerpt: Another new and prominent feature is the "Upkeep" which causes your gold miners to generate less income the more units you have. Why Blizzard did it? Well, needless to say that resources must be carefully managed, so as your population grows an "Upkeep" penalty automatically skims a percentage of the resources gathered by your gold miners. This encourage you to think hard (woohoo you will need your brain!) about what you are building instead of pumping out a stack of more powerful units that require more resources.
