IGN.PC talked to Haden Blackman and John Donham, producers of the massively multiplayer Star Wars Galaxies project, about their upcoming MMORPG. Here's a bit from that interview:
IGNPC: A couple of weeks ago it was revealed that cloning facilities would be the primary method of respawning a character following death. Essentially, PC's will visit cloning facilities to "imprint" their skills and experience for a set fee, and will thus create a kind of "save game" to revert back to in the event of their death. This decision is being met with a good deal of controversy among many of the fans for a number of reasons. Are there any plans to tweak this system in response to some of the outcry?

Haden Blackman: Well, one of the things I'd like to say is that after seeing Episode II, I think that people will have less of a problem with cloning being in the game from a continuity standpoint. It has changed somewhat in the timeframe from then to when SWG takes place, but we're hoping it appears at least somewhat more viable as an option to some of the more hardcore fans after seeing the film.

Truthfully though, it really comes down to a game design decision. We knew we wanted character to respawn, there is no permanent death in SWG. So, it because a choice between having players just pop back to life with no explanation, or giving them something to go with it that has a nice Star Wars wrapping. We felt to latter was the better option.
