Gamespy has put up their latest edition of the Etherlords Dev Diary (#12). This one os about music in the game, and gives a nice insight into the problems assiociated with making a musical score:
But it's also difficult creating music because a game dictates very strict rules. There are laws of the genre which should be observed; things I would never have been able to understand if not for Nival's sound producer, Mikhail Matveev. I am very comfortable with him because he always has a very clear idea of how music should sound, how long the theme should be, etc. For instance, you cannot develop a musical theme too much because there are time limitations, and the music should not interfere with the environmental sounds. Sometimes my musical pieces didn't work because the melody was too pronounced, "sticking out," as it were. After all, it's music for the game, not the game for the music. |
