Gamespy's 'Dungeon Siege 2' coverage continues with Kevin Lambert chatting about the new AI:GameSpy: One of the things that should really separate Dungeon Siege II from the original is the depth of the artificial intelligence. You've created what's called the "Coach AI" technology. Give us an overview of what that means!
Kevin Lambert: Bringing combat in Dungeon Siege II to the next level is our enhanced A.I. system, which we call the "Coach A.I." We created this new technology in order to spice up the feel of combat, [and to] allow us greater control over pacing and to give the monsters more personality.
As the name implies, a designer assigns a "play" to every monster in the game from a set of pre-defined plays. Then the "Coach A.I.," based on specific parameters, gives the monster or group of monsters a set of tasks to perform in-game, taking into account each monsters movement type, attack style, and how the player interacts with it. When performed in-game, these behaviors bring a greater feeling that groups of monsters are working in coordination with each other, while still allowing individuality between monster types. Link!. |
