There is a nice Q&A at Planet Dungeon Siege with Scott "gpmechanic" Bilas, Software Engineer at Gas Powered Games. Questions were asked by Ian "Tiberius" Frazier, the project leader for the Ultima V: Lazarus Siegelet team. Here's something from the interview:

    Tiberius:
How "fast" does the player character move? I've noticed that all your in-game maps and objects are measured on the metric system, so could you give me the rough character speed in km/h? I'm trying to finalize the scale we want to use for our worldmap, and I suspect that knowing the character speed will help a great deal when doing this.

    Scott Bilas:
I did a quick run across a couple nodes in marsh_test. The nodes are 8x8's and it took 4 seconds to cross two. So that's 4 meters per second, or 14.4 km/h. All the characters run at the same rate btw, and always the same rate (we don't currently have a walk hooked up, probably never will bother).
