Mimesis Online Interview

There is a lengthy interview with Piotr Krzywonosiuk (fingers broken now) from Polish developer Tannhauser Gate at Gamers Pulse about Mimesis Online, their MMORPG that recently entered beta stage. Very detailed, very interesting and very recommended. Take this snippit (which is only part of the answer):

    2. What are some of the gameplay features that are unique to Mimesis Online? How does the game break or modify the conventions of the MMPORPG?

I will first try to answer this question by comparing Mimesis Online to Ultima Online, Asheron’s Call and EverQuest.

UO, AC and EQ are all MMPORPGs set in fantasy worlds. Mimesis Online is set in a futuristic world, almost six hundred years after a cosmic-scale catastrophe. That creates a lot of differences - there's no magic in Mimesis Online. The characters have psionic powers, cybernetic implants and mutations available to them, but no magic.

The second difference is that the races and creatures were from start to finish created by us - other than humans, there are no familiar elements like elves, animals known to the players from the world around us, or things like that.

Third, it’s a skill-based game, unlike EverQuest, which is class-based. Players pick the skills they want to have, and what they want to concentrate on developing in, rather than having restrictions placed on them due to their choice of class. Also, unlike in UO, there are checks in the system against players becoming ‘grandmasters’ in several skills, so the gameplay should be more balanced.
