At least this one has some plot, even if all the character interaction is gone. Defintely the worst ultima until Ultima 9 came out. Pass.

garrett has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from garrett)

A nice RPG, with silly jump'n'run scenes. Did take a heavy stand after Ultima 7

Joshua Rodman has rated 4/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Joshua Rodman)

Good way to ruin a franchise: Take a RPG and remove the signature NPC interaction and replace it with annoying badly-done jumping 'puzzles'. Grah!

GhanBuriGhan has rated 5/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from GhanBuriGhan)

I didnt like the "feel" of the world in this one, nor did the graphics impress me much. The dungeons seemed long and uninspired and if I remember right I sorely missed an automap feature. The magic system was cumbersome and I soon gave up on it. Never finished it.

Brassi has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Brassi)

I liked this game. I hated the jumping adventure aspect but it still had good graphics and was fun.

Wolfie has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Wolfie)

An engrossing storyline, soiled by bad jumping puzzles and long/large dungeons with little reward for explorers. Still an enjoyable game.

SirVincealot has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from SirVincealot)

Moody, eerie and unforgettable

Fitik has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Fitik)

Best story, best atmosphere, best game i have ever played...

Yan Rupik has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Yan Rupik)

Many people slated this game, but I thought it was great. A really well realised world.

Calis has rated 6/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Calis)

This title marks the beginning of the end of the Ultima series. No longer set in Brittania, this game is set on the island of Pagan. Plot is still decent, but the gameplay is fairly annoying and not comparable to Ultima 7. It is still a reasonably enjoyable gameplay experience, but not even close to the earlier parts of the series.

Soulman has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Soulman)

Disappointing as an Ultima, but still a good game with a good plot and interesting magic system. Somewhat underrated. Make sure you get the patch, it really changes the gameplay for the better (makes the annoying jumping puzzles easier).

Azira has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Azira)

This could've been great. The much anticipated sequel to the Black Gate and Serpent Isle, this game was flawed in many ways. The action-like interface ruined what was otherwise a good game with a good storyline. A shame really..

DarkFencer has rated 3/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from DarkFencer)

Ultima 8, also known as "Super Avatar Brothers". A horrible game design, the gameplay was awful, and this is coming from a fan of the series. The story also is very inconsistent with the Avatar and how he/she would act.

Not worthy of the Ultima name.

I loved this one and I still do. It was one of my first RPG's.

RiverRat has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from RiverRat)

I kind of liked the gameplay. Not the jump-over-lava-or-die part of it, but being able to jump in general was kind of nice. It let me be a bit more creative, like stacking crates up in town to reach an unlocked door on the second floor of a house in which the main door was locked (I never was good at finding keys in Ultima games). Serpent Isle was great, but I was ready to return to Britania, not another strange new world. Especially one with only a single town, limited outdoor areas, and one HUGE dungeon, made up of several sub-dungeons.

Val has rated 6/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Val)

A unique setting, but it just wasn't Britannia. The jumping puzzles were also an unpleasent suprise. :-P

Gollum has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Gollum)

Take out the jump'n'run parts (latest patch) and the game is actually pretty good most of the time. Different atmosphere and gameplay than the older Ultimas, but still worth of the Ultima name...

Red! has rated 6/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Red!)

It had a great story and was fun, but it kind of betrayed the rest of the Ultima series.

Terilem Dragon has rated 6/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Terilem Dragon)

Ultima VIII was a hotly anticipated title after the sheer excellence of Ultima VII and Serpent Isle. However, this was the first Ultima completely developed under Electronic Arts' influence following their takeover of Origin, and it proved to be a frustrating disppointment. The game was rushed out before it was ready (some major plot elements and the party system were sacrificed), but that only excuses some of its shortfalls. The plot was interesting once you got over the poorly executed gameplay mechanics, but the intangible Ultima "feel" just wasn't there. The world felt half as alive as it did in the past, it was difficult to make any sort of connection with the NPCs, dialogue detail was limited and interactivity was virtually non-existent. Had this plot and setting been used in combination with a graphically updated Ultima VII engine (the interface is practically the same anyway), Ultima VIII undoubtedly would have been yet another classic in the series, but alas...

One of the best games in the greatest rpg series ever!!!

HackiDragon has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from HackiDragon)

Ultima 8 is a very good game and still a true Ultima (although it's close). Unfortunately, the great plot was hacked and cut under the influence of EA, Origin's publisher. There are many plot points left unanswered, there are too little NPCs, with too little dialogue lines. Other drawbacks: the stupid Jump'n Run puzzles, the lack of world interaction compared to U6 and U7, and the lack of character creation (no female Avatar). Good game, but sign of things to come years later with Ultima Ascension :(

Friedrich Hanisch has rated 5/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Friedrich Hanisch)

After Ultima 7 it was very disappointing. They deleted all the lovely advantages from 'The Black Gate' - NPCs with real schedules, looond dialogues, portraits, a really nice world and so on..."

Shyguy has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Shyguy)

After the disappointment of realizing this was nothing like the previous ultimas, this wasn't really a bad game. It was an incredibly atmospheric game, with good graphics, sound, and music. The complex magic system was quite interesting and the plot wasn't bad. Too bad the world was so small and non-interactive. And what's with those jumping puzzles?

Flatline has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Flatline)

Not as good as Black Gate, but still very impressive! Yeah the jumping puzzles were annoying, but jumping in general was cool. If EA hasnt been, this might have become the greatest RPg ever...

Wizzban3 has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Wizzban3)

OK OK. This isn t Ultima 7 Folks. It lost much of its ancestor. BUT this Game makes a lot of fun and its story line is most fascinating to me. The Main Quests are like a Chapter each. Every Element has its own Chapter.Without the Patch those Jump´n´Run Sequences were very annoying. The GFX, the SFX and the MUSIC (especially MIDI) give the game a perfect atmosphere. The Dialogs were great, but some Quests had an open end. Wished that Ultima8 Part2 "LOST VALE" was finished ;(

pagan man has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from pagan man)

Just have to say it wasn't that bad.

The beginning of the end for the Ultima series. A great disappointment following U7. Why oh why did they add jumping???

Jacobus van Zyl has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Jacobus van Zyl)

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish they could make a bigger newer version. I loved the magic system the most(much more realistic than most modern games where you just learn spells and start firing at enemies!) Its unvortunate that the game is difficult to run on modern PC's but anyway...... love the game!!!!!!! bye

Besides Wizardry 8 my favorite RPG. Ok, it was not a classic-true-and-pure one but i found the atmosphere especially the music superb. love it.

Its a good game but can't really stand up to ultima 7 parts 1 or 2.

Nibble has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nibble)

Perhaps I am slightly biased because this is the first RPG I ever played, but surely no more so than those who choose to insult the game based on features that were patched out or the fact that it was not exactly like the other Ultimas. This game drew me in like few games ever have, and probably ever will. It had an intriguing story (even if much that had been intended never made it in) and an excellent atmosphere. While the world was much smaller than that of Ultima 7, it had more detail. The jumping added a new dimension to the game, and just jumping onto roofs and exploring "the thieves' highway" was an adventure in itself. Issues with "jumping puzzles" (among other things) were patched out not that long after the initial release, and patched versions were released for sale. Combat was also fun for me. Perhaps some are content to simply click on the thing they want to die and wait for the battle to play out, but I thoroughly enjoyed being an active participant, dodging, blocking, kicking, and hacking away. Believe it or not, but a fair bit of strategy could be employed using that system. The magic system was simply amazing. Never have I felt like such a part of any world as when I was spending dark nights studying sorcery in ancient tomes, summoning demons from my pentagram and attempting to discover new spells. Each different school of magic had its own special methods, providing fun and variety. The avatar's various spell-casting animations were much better than simply seeing a fireball shoot out of his chest all of a sudden (as with previous Ultimas). While NPCs did not walk from home to work and back again in front of you, they did have schedules and they did appear in different places at the appropriate times. Dialogue was much improved: selecting entire sentences, often with options for witty remarks, is VASTLY preferable to selecting from options such as "job" and "horse." Interaction with objects was slightly reduced; by that, I mean that the player could not roll dough or bake bread, which is apparently extremely important to some people (I will admit that I enjoyed doing such things in U7 and SI, but COME ON). It did, however, have a nice little physics system. You could light a flask of oil on fire, throw it at a barrel, causing the flask to explode, sending the barrel fying off into a nearby guard. This was both fun and (at times) useful. Some say that the avatar did things in the game that were inconsistent with his character: well, guess what? You tell the avatar what to do! Much of the game did involve trying to force the player to do things that may not fit with the eight virtues, but this is more of the classic morality play at work here: just what kind of ends will justify what kind of means? You also get much insight into life in a place ruled by the Guardian. In U9, the avatar was supposed to be haunted with visions of some of the things he did while trying to get off of Pagan, but I hear it was cut out when someone decided to change everything (I wouldn't know first hand, as I have never played U9). In the end, Ultima 8 remains, for many reasons, one of my favourite RPGs of all time, right up there with Fallout and Underworld 1 and 2.

Best Ultima

Nightmare has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nightmare)

Could anything really stand up to the Ultima 7 games? The engine is awesome in this game, but the small linear game world really hurts this title. Personally, I liked jumping though, and the plot was awesome. Pagan was a dark world, where you couldnt find any allies, and were forced to give up virtue to escape... And Ultima VIII portrayed that very well.. Except that I couldnt become a Tempest...

Lots buggs, but if you're not a fan of the ultima series this game is a magic experience.

Ioannis has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Ioannis)

Despite what people still stuck with the eight "virtues" and all say, Ultima VIII Pagan achieved a level of realism and immersion unheard of at those days, and even today. Graphically, sound-wise and in terms of gameplay it made breakthroughs that surpassed the (very high already) standards set up by other Ultima games. After years of gaming however, I believe that the legacy of a game is measured not so much in terms of technical advancements or stubborn adherence to certain "golden rules"; rather, the true measure is the level of immersion that you experience while playing the game. I have to agree with Nibble that Pagan is in a very sparcely populated league of its own, along with Fallout, System Shock, Gothic and the Stygian Abyss; all of which trully excell not because of the amount of ("realistic") things they let you do, but rather for the amount of things they implicitly force you NOT to (enter a particular corridor for fear of a certain foe, and so on). The fact that any barriers to the action are not plot-related but strictly imposed by YOU, can and does make all the difference in the world.

The best Ultima! Although I've never really given IX a chance and seeing how the dick heads at EA have cancelled Ultima X. Probably the last I'll ever play again and again. Come o EA how about a Ultima collection for windows XP, not every-one likes oline games!
