NWNStratics has a nice article about a lunch with Marc Holmes (art director) and Rob Bartel (co-lead designer)" for the soon to be released Neverwinter Nights. Here's a bit:

One great thing they said was that on one of their stress tests, they had a pair of machines hooked together as servers for a total of 64 players, 32 on each with 0 problems. That's good news for everyone worrying about hardware and software limitations, and they haven't even begun the optimization process yet. They also said that the programmers are UNLIKELY to put in any kind of hardcode limit, so as long as you are willing to put up with the lag, load up that server!!!

Big time hint for all multiplayer people, if you open a container, (like searching someone's backpack, or opening an inventory if you are the DM) the client goes to the server to check for contents, you are going to check that person's client, and the server for verification and be on hold for a noticeable pause while the data flows in both directions.

Something else that they would like to add is a spectator mode for the client, so you are a disembodied camera able to wander about and see the playing style and DM'ing style of a person. This is a "want" not a need so it may not be seen until a future mission pack, if at all.
