The Horizons Vault interviewed Artifact Entertainments' game designer Shawn Carnes about their MMORPG. There was only one question for Mr. Carnes: "Why should I play Horizons?". Here is a small part of the answer:
Something that is very important to remember about Horizons is this: while people might refer to themselves as a Warrior, Monk, Jeweler, Scholar, etc., they perform quantitative actions in the game by way of their skills and not of their school. The Warrior utilizes the 2-Handed Weaponry skill to properly wield that Mithril Bastard Sword he or she is swinging about. The Jeweler shapes and cut gemstones for finished pieces of jewelry by way of the Gemworking skill. When a character advances in our game, it is those skills that advance. Characters gain experience by using the skills of their school, and not by just being a certain level in a school. This I think really gives players the control they seek over shaping their character, more so than simply using a class-based system that adheres to a rigid structure. |
