RPG Vault's 'Dragon Empires' Q&A #45 has Codemasters' Community Liaison Manager Peter "Calistas" Tyson answer to questions about the dev team's involvement with the current beta testing.
Jonric: How much opportunity do you have to participate in the beta? What kinds of characters have you created for yourself? Do you start them as newbies or artificially advance them?

Peter Tyson: I am fortunate in that I have a good amount of time to participate in beta if I so wish. However, my participation tends to be about testing a quest or checking something, so it's less play than testing work. In this regard, it does mean that sometimes the testers know more about things than I do, but I believe this to be normal at this stage.

As for characters I've created - well so far, I've only created characters to test quests, and so they have been newbies. I must admit to having cheated to make the testing go quicker. ;)
