There is a preview of Warcraft 3 at Invisibledreams. Nice shots are coming with the article, which is a pleasure to read. Take a look at this:

So what are these Heroes exactly in relation to the Warcraft III game? Basically, Hero units are special units that have the ability to advance in levels, collect items in a small inventory and confer special benefits to the units near them. Each Hero will have different attributes from one another including unique abilities and spells. Not only do Heroes gain experience and grow stronger, but they evolve over time during the game as well. In the single-player campaign, the Heroes will be a core part of the game play and story, thus spending the Hero’s ability points each time the character gains a level is crucial to the game. They have three attributes: Strength, Agility and Intelligence. Each one affects the Hero's combat, movement and spell casting abilities. These attributes grow higher as the Hero gains levels of experience.

Your units will be upgradeable as well, allowing for better weapons and armor as the war progresses. Although you won’t visibly be able to tell, all research will benefit your entire number of units. At this time, Blizzard hasn’t set any limits on the maximum number; apparently WarCraft III will deal heavily on fewer, more powerful units than previous RTS games. The Neutral Units, on the other hand, will include Creeps, Critters, and Chickens. The Creeps are aggressive and will attack; the Critters such as sheep and pigs will not attack unless you annoy them in some fashion. That would be most unfortunate if by chance you upset a Dragon creep, now wouldn’t it? Perhaps you could hire an Ogre creep to help fend off offensive Dragons!
