NPCs feel much more real than in the previous games, they follow a schedule rather than always standing in a set location and they have much more personality in their conversations. I think that was a big innovation as it makes exploring the towns and the characters who live in them as much fun as exploring dungeons and fighting monsters. The graphics may be crude, but the combat and magic system are very refined and it's still a lot of fun to play. Many modern RPGs could learn from Ultima 5 when it comes to creating an interesting storyline and an engrossing game, without needing pretty graphics.
